IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely believed that if children are allowed to take their own decisions, they will become self centered in the future. However, some think that it is essential to build up this development for their own betterment. In my opinion, children should provide the opportunity to chosse their own choices because it will make them confident and self dependent.

The present world is becoming more competitive day by day. For this season, children must practice the habit of selecting their own food, clothes and entertainment. For example, parents should give the freedom to select their children what they want to eat or what types of cloth they want to wear for outing. It will help them to become self dependent and also teach them to take stand for themeselve for their betterment. If someone does not have the ability to take their decision by themeselve, they will not be able to shine in life. Moreover, they will always suffer for lack of confidence or leadership quality which can only build up at the young age, if they are provided with choice of freedom.

On the other hand, if children prefer only their choice, there is a chance of building a selfish society in the long run. In addition, people will think about their own benefit without considering others. Furthermore, it can lead to misunderstanding. For example, if children are allowed to listen music at a loud volume at the midnight, they will follow the same in the future. As a result, other people living in the same colony can be disturbed because of sound pollution. Therefore, some people think that parents should not provide children the freedom of taking or buying things on their own choice.

In conclusion, opinions can vary from person to person, but in my perspective, children should provide the right to take their own decision to make them prepared for the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear opinion: you support children having choices because this can build confidence and independence, while acknowledging the risk of selfishness. The examples about choosing food and clothes and playing loud music at night are relevant to the question. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The benefits are explained through confidence and future success, but the link between everyday choices and becoming able to make important decisions could be clearer. The concern about selfishness is also asserted more than explored; the loud-music example shows inconsiderate behaviour, but not fully how parental guidance could prevent it. Develop each view with a fuller explanation and make your final position more specific.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting children’s choices, a contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the other hand,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion. The main progression is understandable, but some linking is mechanical, and several ideas are joined without a clear relationship. For instance, the move from confidence to leadership and then to “shine in life” would benefit from a more explicit explanation. References such as “they” in “they will follow the same in the future” could also be clearer. Use fewer formulaic connectors and make the connection between each claim, explanation, and example more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “self dependent,” “leadership quality,” “selfish society,” and “sound pollution,” so the main ideas are generally clear. There are, however, noticeable spelling and word-choice problems that reduce precision. Examples include “chosse,” “season” where “reason” is intended, “themeselve,” and “cloth” for “clothes.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “take their own decisions,” “provide the freedom,” and “take stand.” These do not prevent understanding, but they show that collocation and word forms are not consistently controlled. Learn common phrases for decision-making and independence, and proofread spelling and plural forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if children are allowed…” and a relative clause in “which can only build up at the young age.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “parents should give the freedom to select their children what they want” has an unclear sentence structure, while “children should provide the opportunity” uses an incorrect subject–verb relationship. The final sentence also needs a clearer construction: “children should be provided with the right to make their own decisions.” Review clause structure, passive forms, articles, and agreement. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentences easier to read.
