IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

According to mind of some people. Letting children to choose there daily life decisions. For example what they want to eat, to wear, or to do, is cause of creating a society in which every one has there own willing. While other people admit that it is neccesary for childrens to make there own decisions about the things they have effects on them.

As if we look in society we can find both types of people. For example some parents are strickly forcing there children to eat traditional foods. To wear such type of outfits which are suited with there cultures. On the other hand some parents are allowing there children to eat and try new foods. Follow international dressing trends.

From my perspective parents should maintain balance in this case. They have to not must discourage there children about making there decisions in there life. They need to set limits for there childrens Make them understand to know the limits. Not to cross these limits while making decisions by own. For example choose the food but must to kept your healt in your mind. Wear the cloths but also consider the weather condition for clothing. For example one of my nighbour have allow there children to play at park without getting permission every time. But he told them must to return to home before 6pm. By this way his children are now so punctual and always consider timing to go to home at set time. Similarly we need to give permissons to our children and also creating boundries which they have to maintain.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear opinion that parents should maintain a balance, so the response covers the main parts of the task. The examples about traditional food and clothing versus trying new foods illustrate the contrasting approaches, while the park curfew supports your view that children can have freedom within limits. However, the first view is described more than explained: you do not fully show how everyday choices might lead children to become self-centred. The second view could also be developed by explaining how making decisions helps children build responsibility or confidence. Extending these points with clearer reasoning would make the discussion more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: it introduces the two positions, gives examples of different parenting styles, and then presents your own view. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand,” “From my perspective,” and “Similarly” help signal the direction of the discussion. However, some connections are abrupt or unclear. For example, “Follow international dressing trends” is a fragment rather than a fully connected point, and the shift from the general discussion to the neighbour’s example could be smoother. The final paragraph also combines several recommendations and examples in a long sequence. Use clearer paragraph development and connect each example explicitly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “traditional foods,” “international dressing trends,” “limits,” and “punctual,” and your meaning is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices, collocations, and spellings are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “own willing,” “strickly forcing,” “permissons,” and “boundries.” These errors sometimes make the reader pause to interpret your meaning. Aim to use more precise expressions for the ideas of independence, parental control, and responsibility, and check spelling carefully. Learning common collocations such as “make their own decisions” and “set boundaries” will help your vocabulary sound more natural and appropriate for an academic discussion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional idea in “While other people admit…” and the example beginning “For example one of my nighbour…”. The main ideas can usually be followed, but grammatical errors occur across the response and some sentences are difficult to process. For instance, “They have to not must discourage there children” has an incorrect verb construction, while “one of my nighbour have allow there children” has problems with agreement and verb form. Sentence fragments such as “Follow international dressing trends” also affect accuracy. Practise forming complete sentences and checking subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries; this will make your ideas clearer while preserving your attempts at varied structures.
