IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

People have different opinions about whether children should be allowed to choose their own decisions. Some believe that this can make them self-centred while other argue that it help them to become independence. In my opinion, children should allow to make simple decisions but parents should guide them.

On the one hand, allowing them to make their own decisions may have some drwabacks. Young children do not always understand what is better for them, they only focuse on their personal whishes. For instance, they may prefer eating junk food, instead of healthy meals or spenind too much time on tevevision or smartphones. Consiquenitly, they may develop unhealthy habits and become less willing to follow rules and become lazy. Therefore, parental guidness is crucial for their development both mentally and physically.

On the other hand, I believe that making their own decisions help them to become more independence and responsible. When babies choose their clothes, hobbies and entertainment, they learn to express their prefrences, Moreover, they can built decision-making skill that will be useful in adulthood. In this way, they are able to learn what is better and what is wrong. For example, parents can allow them to chooes their favourt books while ensuring that they complete their homework. as a result, children can enjoy some freedom without ignoring their responsiblities. These abalities may also lead them to bright future.

In conlusion, although giving children too much freedom may encourgae selfish behaviour, allowing them to choose their decisions has many benefits. I strongly believe that parents should give youngsters age-appropirate choices and provide gauidance whenever necessary.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both views and state a clear position: children should make simple choices while parents guide them. The two body paragraphs develop relevant reasons, including unhealthy habits on one side and responsibility and decision-making skills on the other. Examples such as choosing junk food and selecting books help illustrate the discussion. This fits the descriptor because the task is covered and the main ideas are extended with support. To strengthen the response further, explain the link between everyday choices and becoming self-centred more precisely; the claim that children may “become lazy” is broad and not fully demonstrated. You could also develop how parental guidance helps children learn to consider other people’s needs, not only their own responsibilities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction presents your view, the body paragraphs discuss opposing perspectives, and the conclusion restates your position. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the structure easy to follow. Ideas within each paragraph generally move from a claim to an explanation and example. This is effective organisation, though some links are a little mechanical, and a few sentences contain several consequences joined together, such as the sequence about unhealthy habits, rules, and laziness. Use more varied transitions and make the relationship between each consequence explicit. Check punctuation around sentence openings and clauses so that the progression remains smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “self-centred,” “parental guidance,” “decision-making,” and “responsibilities.” However, spelling and word-form errors are noticeable throughout and sometimes make the reader pause: examples include “drwabacks,” “whishes,” “prefrences,” and “responsiblities.” There are also inaccurate or unnatural choices, such as “choose their own decisions,” “become more independence,” and “bright future.” These issues limit precision and control, even though the intended meaning is usually recoverable. Build accuracy by checking spelling carefully and learning common word partnerships and forms, for example “make their own choices,” “become more independent,” and “have a bright future.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including contrast clauses with “although,” conditional ideas, and sentences beginning with “When” and “For example.” This gives the response some structural variety. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction occur often enough to affect accuracy. For instance, “other argue” needs subject–verb agreement, “it help them” needs a singular verb, and “children should allow to make” is missing the passive form “be allowed.” The sentence “Young children do not always understand what is better for them, they only…” also joins two independent clauses with a comma. Practise checking each sentence for a complete verb phrase, agreement, and correct clause boundaries; this will make your ideas easier to read.
