IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is an ongoing debate about whether the children should be allowed to decide on their everyday utilities (such as food, clothes and entertainment). Some individuals believe that it will raise a society where individuals are selfish and will prioritize their own needs, while others argue that it is beneficial for their holistic development. This essay will discuss about both perspectives with relevant examples before presenting my own opinion.

On the one hand, proponents of not allowing them to make their own choices argue that it will spoil the childrens' behaviour and make them more demanding. As a result, by their adulthood they would be arrogant and selfish as they have been given what they want from a young age. For instance, a boy has been given whatever he wants by his parents since he was a child. Then, in the future, he would expect that to continue and have his desires fullfilled. Consequently, they will grow with that mindset and a society with similar thinking will be formed.

On the other hand, critics contend that it is necessary for children to make their own decisions because it ensures holistic development and promotes decision making from a tender age. Moreover, they will be more expressive and open towards their parents; also the parents can learn more about their childrens' preference. For example, I am a single child in my family. I have been allowed to decide on my everyday matters by my own preference. Now that i am an adult, my bond with my parents is better as there is no hindarance in communication and my parents know about my preferences.

In conclusion, while both views have their own reasons, I personally believe that the children should be able to make their own selelction due to the reasons discussed above. Furthermore, I think it is way more practical and beneficial in the long run.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear preference for children making everyday choices, so the response covers the main requirements of the task. The argument against children choosing is supported by the example of a boy who is given everything, while your personal experience illustrates the benefits of choice and communication. However, the first example mainly predicts selfishness rather than explaining how limited parental guidance leads to it, and the second focuses on your relationship with your parents more than on broader decision-making skills. To develop the ideas further, explain the conditions under which choice is beneficial—for example, age-appropriate decisions alongside parental limits—and connect each example more directly to the social outcomes in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear four-paragraph structure, with each body paragraph presenting one side and the conclusion restating your position. The progression from the opposing view to the benefits of choice is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help orient the reader. Some linking is a little mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Moreover,” “For example,” and “Consequently.” The sentence beginning “Moreover, they will be more expressive…” also joins related points with a semicolon and “also,” making the relationship slightly awkward. For stronger cohesion, vary the transitions and use clearer references to connect each example to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “holistic development,” “proponents,” “arrogant,” and “preferences.” These choices help express both sides of the discussion, and the meaning remains clear. However, some less common expressions are inaccurate or unnatural: “everyday utilities” does not fit food, clothes, and entertainment, and “make their own selection” is less natural than “make their own choices.” There are also spelling errors in “childrens’,” “fullfilled,” “hindarance,” and “selelction,” which reduce precision. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; using precise terms such as “everyday decisions” and “parental guidance” would make the argument sound more fluent and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because it ensures holistic development” and “as they have been given what they want.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely obstruct the message. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. In “whether the children should be allowed,” the article is unnecessary when speaking generally; “discuss about both perspectives” uses an incorrect verb pattern; and “I have been allowed to decide … by my own preference” has an awkward construction. There are also inconsistent pronouns in “a boy … he … they” and a missing capital in “i.” Review articles, verb patterns, pronoun agreement, and punctuation to make your varied structures more consistently accurate.
