IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Decision making is one of the most crucial asspect of of our everyday being as an adult that we must have to do while considering alot of things around us like other people and our society in which we are living in because our decisons doesnt only effects the one who is makin it but the whole surrounding gets effected by this like a butter fly effect.

The sense of this decision making is begin to develop in early childhood and its an important part of parenting to teach our kids how to make the right decision at the right time. our society is mostly devided into two kinds of parents, one who belive that allowing childern to make thier own decission on everday matter such as food, clothes or entertainment will make them selfish, if they give thier childern the indipence to choose for thier own self in their own matter they will always think about themselve not thier parents or the society when they grow up, they may be just going to prioritize thier ownself in every matter and would not think about others. so they always try to control thier kids and get annoyed when they show the urge to make thier own choices.

On contrary, other group of parents think that by giving thier childern a complete free will, like allowing them to choose what ever they want for themselves, would build self confidence in them and they will learn the real struggle of making bad decision as one day they must have to make decision when tey bacome independent in life later on.

In my view, we should follow some in between pathway in both of these extreme ends, we should must allow childern to make thier own choices in some matters and prohibit them in some. This mixture of controlling and giving them free will to decide but in a very right propotion, may prove more benificial for both childern and society, later on.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and give a clear middle-ground opinion: children should make some choices, while parents should set limits. The discussion of the first view explains the concern that children may become self-centred, and the second identifies confidence and learning from mistakes as benefits. However, these points remain general and are not supported with a specific example or much explanation of how children’s choices affect others. The conclusion repeats your position but does not clarify what kinds of decisions children should make independently or where parental guidance is needed. Develop each view with a concrete example and explain why it supports your argument; this would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. This makes the main line of discussion understandable. Some links are also clear, particularly the contrast introduced by “On contrary” and the shift to your view with “In my view.” However, the first body paragraph is very long and contains several ideas joined together, so the progression is harder to follow. Connectors such as “so” and repeated references to “other group of parents” make the organisation feel somewhat mechanical. Divide the first discussion into clearer units, use pronouns or concise references where appropriate, and make the relationship between each reason and its consequence explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “self confidence,” “independent,” “prioritize,” and “free will,” and the reader can generally understand your intended meaning. There is some variety in how you describe parental control and children’s choices. However, spelling errors are frequent, including “asspect,” “decissons,” “childern,” and “indipence,” and several word choices or phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “everyday being,” “complete free will,” and “right propotion.” These errors make the writing less clear and limit the precision of your argument. Build a reliable set of topic vocabulary and check spelling, word forms, and collocations; for example, use “everyday decisions” and “a balanced approach.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt longer sentences and use subordinate clauses to explain causes and consequences, for example, “if they give their children the independence to choose … they will always think about themselves.” This shows an effort to express connected ideas, but complex sentences are often faulty, and errors sometimes make the reader work to understand the meaning. Examples include “one of the most crucial aspect,” “our decisions doesn’t only effects,” and “we should must allow,” which involve agreement, verb form, and modal construction problems. Sentence boundaries are also difficult to identify in the long opening and first body paragraph. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and modal patterns, and split long sentences into shorter, controlled units.
