Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There has been an on going debate regarding children`s brought up.Some people believe that allowing children to make their own decisions is more likely to make them selfish. While others argue that children should be free to make their own choices about matters that affect them.Considering both perspectives ,I believe that children should be allowed to tell their preferences but parents should be there to guide them during difficult phases.

Proponents of the view that young adults who are free to make their own choices, often become self centered and do not care about the repurcussions of their actions to society.Children who take their own decisions just want to fulfill their wishes no matter what.Giving absoulte freedom to children about their choices can create chaos in society.Young individuals become so obsessed with their desires that they can fall into evil traps easily. At such vulnerable age ,children can not only harm themselves but they can also become a trial for both their parents and the society where they live in.

On the other hand, some people argue that giving children the independence to make their choices on everyday matters is crucial for their overall development.Children who are used to making choices on their own are generally more confident and independent. These traits are vital to succceed in today's increasingly competetive world.Young adults who are capable to make choices on routine matters are more likely to make right choices in serious matters.

In conclusion,I contend that absolute independence can be fatal for children .The better strategy is to provide chlidren the right mentorship and advise them to make concious choices .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear position: children may express preferences, while parents should guide them. The discussion of unrestricted choice is relevant, especially the point that children may not foresee consequences, and you also explain how making routine decisions can build confidence and independence. However, the first view receives more explanation than the second, and claims such as children falling into “evil traps” or creating “chaos in society” are broad and would be stronger with a specific example or clearer reasoning. Your conclusion restates your position but does not add much development. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how guided choices teach responsibility and give a concrete example of a suitable everyday decision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The progression from the risks of unrestricted choice to the benefits of independence is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help orient the reader. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement. Some connections are nevertheless mechanical, and the opening paragraph’s contrast between “Some people” and “While others” is not smoothly joined. Within paragraphs, several claims are placed one after another without showing exactly how one leads to the next. Use a wider range of linking and referencing, and make the relationship between each reason and its consequence explicit to create more fluent progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “self-centered,” “independence,” “overall development,” and “vulnerable age.” These choices allow you to discuss both risks and benefits, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “matters that affect them.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions reduce accuracy: “repurcussions,” “absoulte,” “succceed,” and “a trial for” are examples. Some wording is also overly dramatic or vague, particularly “evil traps” and “chaos in society.” Check spelling carefully and choose collocations that express your point precisely; this would make the vocabulary more controlled and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “children who are used to making choices on their own” and a conditional structure in “no matter what.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some sentence-boundary, punctuation, and grammatical-pattern errors limit control. For example, “Some people believe … selfish. While others argue …” incorrectly separates a dependent contrast from the preceding sentence, and “young adults who are free to make their own choices, often become” has an unnecessary comma. There are also missing spaces after punctuation and inconsistent apostrophe use. Practise joining contrasting clauses correctly and proofreading sentence boundaries, commas, and possessive forms; greater accuracy across these structures would improve the overall control.
