IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is debatable that how some people believe that if they allow their children to take an account of their own choices on daily matters like food, cloths or entertainment is better while on the other hand, some people stand on the opposite side of it. From my point of view, I think it's better if parents allow their children to take ownership of their decisions or choices on a regular basis.

I believe that children should be allowed to take decisions for themselves. One of the major reason for that would be, since the choice varies from generation to generation and if children are allowed to take some decisions for themselves, it makes them feel responsible for the option they have considered themselves for. For instance, youth might have a broader perspective about a particular thing because they try to exlore all the possible options which allows them a sense of uniqueness.

It is actually better if children are allowed to make a choice or take any regular decision like which food they would like to eat or which cloth they would want to wear. It would allow the children to take decisions and learn a lot from their own mistakes if they make any wrong one. It actually could be very encouraging for them as it would make them feel independent. Parents should therefore encourage their children for taking decisions.

While on the other hand, parents tend to have more experience because they have experienced and faced a lot of things in their life which their children might have not faced. But, parents should not dominate the choices of their children because doing that would lead to decrease in creativity and would lead to children being under the pressure to please their parents by agreeing with the choices they make.

To conclude, I believe that parents should encourage their children to take a decision for a day-to-day life based scenarios as it'd make their children more creative and allowing them to be more independent and accountable for their own decisions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear opinion that children should make everyday decisions, and you address both perspectives: children can become responsible and independent, while parents bring greater life experience. These points are relevant, but the discussion is uneven. The case for children’s choices is repeated across two paragraphs, whereas the opposing view is briefly acknowledged and not explored with a concrete example or explanation of when parental guidance is important. Some support is also unclear, such as the claim that young people have a “broader perspective” because they explore options. To strengthen the response, develop both views more evenly and explain your examples in greater detail, while keeping your position clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, supporting paragraphs, a paragraph acknowledging parents’ experience, and a conclusion. The ideas generally progress from children’s responsibility to independence and then to parental guidance. However, the two paragraphs supporting children’s choices overlap, so the argument feels repetitive rather than steadily developed. Some linking is mechanical or awkward, particularly “While on the other hand,” and the opening sentence is difficult to follow. Use clearer topic sentences and make each paragraph serve a distinct purpose—for example, one paragraph for the benefits of children’s choices and another for the value and limits of parental guidance. Clearer references between ideas would also improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “responsible,” “independent,” “creativity,” and “accountable.” These terms help communicate your main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “take an account of their own choices,” “cloths,” “take decisions,” and “day-to-day life based scenarios” do not sound natural in context. There are also spelling errors such as “exlore.” Aim for more precise, natural phrasing and check spelling carefully. Vary repeated words such as “choices” and “decisions” where possible, while ensuring alternatives fit the meaning rather than simply adding more complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and causal structures, and your main meaning is usually understandable. Some sentences, however, are difficult to control. The opening construction, “It is debatable that how some people believe…,” combines structures awkwardly, while “One of the major reason… would be, since…” has problems with agreement and sentence construction. In “it makes them feel responsible for the option they have considered themselves for,” the clause is not grammatically well formed. There are also issues with articles, plurals, and punctuation. Practise building complex sentences around one clear main clause, then check agreement and clause connections; this will make your ideas easier to follow.
