IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, public debate has been revolving that children should be independent on daily matters like food clothes and entertainment result in the society where people only think about themselves and some individuals beleive that children should be independ about making decision about their life which affect them. In my opinion, i am in the favour of latter view.

One of the most significant change that happen is that life is running at very fast pace. Everyone is busy in their own life, even our parents also. Therefore, children must have ability to make their own decision instead of depending on their guardians. For instance, if a child faces a problem in their school, he should be reponsible to solve their problem wisely, rather than depending on someone who solve his problem and help him. Children should have ability to tackle their problems. So if we want them to adopt these kind of abilities we should make our childrein independ and these skills help them to grow in their life. Another example that support my idea is that if a child go with their friends for shopping or food, he should be independ to make decision what is good for him and what is bad for himself, instaed of calling their parents what should i eat or what should i shop. I feel like its a waste of time for both.

There are some concerns about children independancy which inculdes people think that if our children make their own decision, they make our society selfish which only think about their own wishes. i think there are very fewer people which think like that and very fewer child which behaves like that. In some cases we face such problem but i stronly believe that in modern day society children independancy have paramount significance to grow our society.

In conclusion, children must have abilities to overcome their problems and it should play a benefical role to grow our society. People must think positive about their children to allowing them to make their own decision.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear preference for children making decisions, stating, “In my opinion, i am in the favour of latter view,” and you provide relevant examples about solving school problems and choosing food or clothes. However, the discussion is uneven: the argument for independence receives most of the development, while the opposing view is reduced to a brief claim that children may become selfish. Explain more fully why some people fear this outcome—for example, how unrestricted choices might weaken consideration for others—and respond to that concern. Your own reasoning also needs clearer development: the shopping example focuses on saving parents’ time rather than showing how decision-making benefits a child. These gaps leave parts of the task only partially addressed and some ideas under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, a paragraph supporting independence, a paragraph acknowledging the opposing view, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Therefore,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes repetitive: the first main paragraph repeatedly says children should make decisions and develop abilities without clearly grouping the reasons and examples. The shift to the opposing view is abrupt, and the conclusion largely repeats earlier claims rather than bringing both perspectives together. Some references, such as “these kind of abilities” and “such problem,” are not fully clear. Organise each paragraph around one main point and use more precise links between claims, explanations, and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “guardians,” “tackle their problems,” “independency,” and “paramount significance.” However, the range is limited and several word choices, forms, and spellings are inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making the message harder to follow. Examples include “independent on daily matters,” “make decision,” “childrein,” “instaed,” and “benefical.” Phrases such as “life is running at very fast pace” and “grow our society” also do not sound natural in this context. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than inserting formal-sounding words; for example, use “make their own decisions,” “develop independence,” and “contribute to society.” Proofreading spelling and word forms would also improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if a child faces a problem in their school” and a contrast using “rather than.” These attempts show some range, but complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the argument difficult to read. For example, “One of the most significant change that happen” has problems with number and verb form, while “if a child go with their friends” has subject–verb agreement errors. Articles, pronouns, and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “in the modern day society” and “what should i eat or what should i shop.” Practise checking agreement, verb forms, articles, and punctuation, and keep longer sentences under control.
