IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The description says about individual choice of children and how they transform themselves in the society

When the child is allowed to make their own choices about there day to day things such as food, clothing, entertainment etc that kind of act could enable them to build individual personality of there own without

immitate someones.

When the child is permitted to make decisions of their own will that could help tp navigate through the hardships in the life in the future.

Childrens capabilities would be grown and advances if their choices were valued

On the other side of the coin there is a perception that when in such a situation children when encouraged to make choices of their own will that could make them to turned more into self centred rather than as a community in a society were individual will ever driven by the personal things rather than the benefits of the society as a whole

In my perspnal opinion the child should be evered encouraged to make their own choices instead of guiding them in every possible aspects which eventually cause damage where the child would not grow into and individual person

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You present a relevant opinion: children should be encouraged to make their own choices, and you briefly explain that this may help them develop independence and cope with future difficulties. You also mention the opposing concern that children could become self-centred. However, the discussion is only partial: neither view is developed with a specific example or clear explanation of how everyday choices affect children or society. The opening sentence does not establish a clear response to the question, and the conclusion is brief. The response is also 56 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to address both views fully. Develop each side with reasons and examples, then restate your position clearly at the end.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: you introduce the topic, give reasons for allowing choice, present the opposing view with “On the other side of the coin,” and state your opinion. This gives the reader some sense of the discussion. However, the progression is not consistently clear, and the ideas are presented as separate statements rather than developed paragraphs. The long sentence beginning “On the other side of the coin” is difficult to follow, while the final opinion is not clearly separated as a conclusion. Some linking is repetitive or awkward, and references such as “that kind of act” are not precise. Use a clear paragraph for each view, connect each reason to an explanation or example, and finish with a concise concluding paragraph.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “individual personality,” “self-centred,” “hardships,” and “benefits of the society.” These choices show an attempt to discuss both personal development and social consequences. However, the range is limited, and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “build individual personality of there own,” “navigate through the hardships in the life,” and “individual will ever driven.” Spelling errors, including “immitate” and “perspnal,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural phrases and check spelling carefully. Vocabulary such as “independence,” “responsibility,” and “consideration for others” would help express the ideas more precisely without relying on repeated references to individual choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, including a conditional structure in “When the child is allowed to make their own choices … that kind of act could enable them.” However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty, making some ideas difficult to understand. Examples include “that could make them to turned more into self centred” and “the child should be evered encouraged,” where verb forms and sentence construction are not controlled. There are also problems with agreement and articles, as in “Childrens capabilities would be grown.” Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention, particularly in the extended sentence about society. Practise accurate conditional sentences and shorter, complete sentences before adding more complex structures.
