IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Few people blieve that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, cloths and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. On the other hand some people argue that it is crucial for children to make decisions about matters that may affect them. Both opinions have pros and cons but finding a middle way is wise choice here.

First of all, allowing children to make their own decisions on daily matters may result in a selfish or unethical society. Everyone would think about their own wishes and facilities. In their opinion, this type of freedom may result in high demands of children because they are not muture enough to understand positive and negative affects. Furthermore, this may lead to disobeying parents and their advices in crucial matters. Moreover, they may struggle to follow practical rules and ethics of living a life.

If i talk about the other argument raise by many individuals, giving independence to children may teaches them wise decision making. This may help to develop confidence and dealing methods with the daily life challenges. For instance, if someone made a bad choice by own then only he/she would be responsible for the consiquences. This may leads to teach them how to tackle these problems.

In my opinion, both arguments are understandable and correct but most crucial thing is how much freedom they have?. Giving ultimate complete independence is not a wise decision or restricting them from every single choice is also not a good habit. Children should be allowed to make choices in everyday matters but parents should guide them on every step. The most important matter is that parents should set limits on children on those scenarios where decision may affect them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both perspectives and give a clear overall preference for a middle way: children should make everyday choices while parents provide guidance and limits. Relevant reasons include the risk of excessive demands and the opportunity to build confidence and learn from consequences. However, the discussion remains general and some points are not fully explained. For example, “disobeying parents” and difficulty following “practical rules and ethics” are asserted without showing how everyday choices lead to these outcomes. The example about a child making a bad choice is also hypothetical and could be developed with a specific situation. To strengthen the response, explain each view more fully and make your final position more precise. The 40 words copied from the task prompt were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “Furthermore,” and “For instance” help signal the direction of ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes repetitive, with several points added through “Moreover” or “This may” rather than clearly showing how they connect. The shift to the second view—“If i talk about the other argument”—is awkward, and the conclusion repeats the middle-ground idea without synthesising the reasons. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each explanation directly to its main claim; vary linking expressions and ensure pronouns such as “this” have an unmistakable reference.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “independence,” “decision making,” “confidence,” and “consequences.” These choices communicate the main ideas, but the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make the writing less natural. Examples include “cloths” for “clothes,” “muture” for “mature,” and “cons iquences” (written as “consiquences”) for “consequences.” Phrases such as “high demands of children,” “dealing methods,” and “ultimate complete independence” are also imprecise or unnatural. Build a more accurate range of expressions for discussing parenting and responsibility, and check spelling carefully. More precise collocations would make your arguments clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If someone made a bad choice … then only he/she would be responsible.” However, errors are frequent, and some complex attempts are faulty. For example, “giving independence to children may teaches them” has incorrect verb form; after “may,” use the base form “teach.” “This may leads” has the same problem, while “both arguments … is” would require subject–verb agreement. There are also sentence-boundary and punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in “Both opinions have pros and cons but finding a middle way is wise choice here,” and inconsistent capitalisation of “I.” Practise accurate modal constructions, agreement, articles, and punctuation, then proofread each sentence.
