IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued by people to give children freedom over deciding their own choices in everyday life will result in the self-centered society of individual who will only think about their own wishes. Meanwhile, other believes it is necessary to give space to children and allowing them to understand and decide their daily life matters by themselves. However, in my opinion we should not confined children to restrictions rather allow them to think critically about their matters and take the best decision out of that situation.

On one hand, people who support the idea of letting children make their own choices will result in a society which is going to think only about itself, have the faith that this behavior will make them rigid and limited to themselves and they will less care about the needs of the others. For instance, if one truely wishes to buy laptop for games then he will not care if his sibling has its dire need for his academic purpose. He will works only to acheive his own dreams. In our society, we do have many people who have that sense about children.

On the other hand, other group of people believes that allowing children to make their daily life choices will help them in character building and will make their decision making ability more strong. Refering to the example of the individual who is going to choose his major for university life. Giving him freedom to choose will allow him to think critically that which course is going to best match his interests, he will learn about his strength and weaknesses and will therefore learn from his own decisions.

In my opinion, allowing children to make the decisions about the matter which affect them will not make them less human but will ultimately increase their intelectual level.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You discuss both perspectives and state a clear opinion: children should be allowed to make decisions about matters affecting them. The examples of choosing a laptop and selecting a university major are relevant and help illustrate the contrasting views. However, the first position is explained mainly through a single hypothetical example, and the claim that choice creates self-centred adults would benefit from clearer reasoning. Your own view is also asserted more than developed: explain how guidance or boundaries can help children make choices while considering others. This addresses the task, but the two sides and your conclusion are not equally developed. Extend the reasoning behind each example and connect it more explicitly to the question of children’s everyday choices.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. The signposts “On one hand” and “On the other hand” make the contrast easy to follow, and the examples generally appear in the relevant paragraphs. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some of the clearer progression associated with a stronger performance. However, links between ideas can feel mechanical, and some references are unclear—for example, “this behavior” and “he” do not always identify the people or situation precisely. The conclusion is also very brief and does not draw together the discussion. Use more precise referencing and add linking sentences that show how each example supports the paragraph’s main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “self-centered,” “character building,” “decision making,” and “critically.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “matters that affect them.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, collocation, word-form, and spelling errors reduce naturalness. Examples include “make their own choices” alongside the awkward “deciding their own choices,” “more strong,” “truely,” and “acheive.” Some expressions, such as “less human” and “the best decision out of that situation,” are imprecise for the intended meaning. Build a more accurate range of collocations and check spelling and word forms so your ideas sound clearer and more academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional example beginning “if one truly wishes” and a relative clause in “the matter which affect them.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main meaning is generally understandable. However, some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction remain. For example, “other believes” should be “others believe,” “he will works” should be “he will work,” and “the matter which affect them” needs subject–verb agreement. The opening sentence is also difficult to control because its introductory structure does not connect smoothly to the main clause. Practise building accurate complex sentences and check agreement and verb forms, while retaining the variety you are attempting.
