IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

There are two thoughts of individuals some prospective that gave permissions your children about the daily life activites like eating , clothing , music , automatic results in a society that just these type of childs thought about themselves while, on other hand thought that its a curcial role to took decisions by there adults ownself as that affect in any way . I strongly agree that adolecents have to make own choices to be better person and strong as well because decion making makes confident children more . Firstly , the children who are clumpy in selecting the things by themselves are in low confident all time in all activites run in socitey but there are the some disadvantages occured as the childrens who are habbitual of just choice there decisions whatever it was in clothes , food any entertainment sort just listen to mown self results a negative impact as these type of childs did not care others like in a school some of nchild are not rich by lookinh this type of students would affected and create embtrassing sitation . For example acording t physicology the adults are are contionously habbitual of lookinh up thenselves would resuls in stubbned behaviour which automatic results these are being selfish did not listens to there parents as well .Secoundly , some people belives that for increasing confident , self boost , enhancing personality its a curcial role to took pick up there choices by ownself is necessary like in a school if some of the students are bully to others students its a first step of this child to answer them gave punishment by teacher took decision immediately instead of thinking and crying the whatever situation it was handlle carefully that affects themselves it only by giving confident by gaving the autority to look after there matters by themselves which creates a postive image to society as well .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear personal view—“I strongly agree” that children should make their own choices—and you attempt to discuss both perspectives. The point that independent decisions can build confidence is relevant, and the example involving a child responding to bullying shows an effort to illustrate the benefits. However, the opposing view is difficult to follow: the discussion of children choosing food or clothes shifts into an unclear example about poorer students feeling embarrassed, without explaining how this demonstrates selfishness. The response therefore addresses the task only partially, and several ideas remain limited or under-explained. To strengthen it, explain each view directly, then support your opinion with a clear, realistic example and a brief conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is an attempt to organise the response around two views, signalled by “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and the ideas broadly relate to the question. However, the opening sentence is difficult to interpret, and the first body section combines several points without a clear progression. For example, the discussion moves from low confidence to clothing choices, social embarrassment, and selfish behaviour, but the links between these claims are not made explicit. The second section also contains a long sentence that makes the bullying example hard to follow. Use separate paragraphs for the two views and your opinion, with one main point developed in each. Clearer referencing and fewer, more purposeful linking phrases would make the argument easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “confident,” “selfish,” “authority,” and “personality,” and you try to express ideas about independence and social behaviour. However, the range is limited and many word choices or forms are inaccurate, sometimes making meaning difficult to understand. Phrases such as “automatic results,” “clumpy in selecting,” and “look after there matters” do not express the intended ideas clearly; spelling errors such as “curcial” and “physicology” also reduce clarity. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than using ambitious phrases you are unsure about. For instance, describe children as “hesitant to make choices” and say that decision-making can “build self-confidence.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt some longer sentences and use clauses to explain causes and examples, but control is inconsistent. Many sentences contain errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, and articles, which can make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “its a curcial role to took decisions” has an incorrect verb pattern, while “the adults are are contionously habbitual” shows problems with repetition and sentence construction. The opening sentence also lacks a clear grammatical structure. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with one subordinate clause at a time. Check subject–verb agreement, verb forms after “to,” and punctuation so that long ideas are divided into readable sentences.
