Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response recognises both views and gives a general position: children’s choices may help them become independent, but unrestricted decision-making could lead to harmful outcomes. However, the discussion only partially addresses the question because the arguments are broad and often unclear. For example, the claim that children “never become rude” is not explained, and the opposing view lists possible consequences such as poor health and “bad company” without showing how everyday choices lead to them. The conclusion repeats these points rather than clarifying when children should decide for themselves. Develop each side with a specific, relevant example and state your own view more directly—for instance, distinguishing low-risk choices from decisions that require parental guidance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: an introduction is followed by separate paragraphs for the two views and a conclusion. Basic signposting such as “On the other hand” helps readers recognise the change in perspective. However, the overall progression is difficult to follow because several ideas are placed together without clear links or explanation. In the first body paragraph, independence, family relationships, stress and respect are mentioned in quick succession; the connection between them is not made explicit. The conclusion also combines several claims in a long, repetitive sentence. Group related points, explain how each supports the paragraph’s main idea, and use clearer referencing and transitions rather than relying mainly on formulaic openings.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate its general subject, including “independent,” “decisions,” “responsibilities” and “mental health.” It also attempts more formal phrasing, such as “Supporters advocate” and “To commence.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems make parts of the argument difficult to understand. Examples include “weaken their parents,” “the desires things,” “make a bad company,” and misspellings such as “responsiblities” and “physcial.” Aim for precise, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. For example, explain that children may “pressure their parents,” may be “given the things they want,” or may “fall in with a negative peer group,” depending on the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “because” and “if.” Nevertheless, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty; errors occur frequently enough to make some relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “if children are not provided the desires things then they weaken their parents” has problems with sentence construction and the relationship between its clauses. There are also errors in agreement and sentence formation, as in “It also harm their mental” and “They do not carry any kind responsibilities.” Review subject–verb agreement, articles and plural forms, and practise building one clear main clause before adding subordinate clauses. More accurate punctuation would also make the long sentences easier to follow.
