IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people argue that children may become self centerd if they are allowed to make choices about their daily routine by their own. While other think, its their basic right to make decisions those are ultimately related to them.
This essay will discuss both points and my view in the end.
On the one hand, making self choices develop a sense of seniorship in kids minds. They may start deciding everything by their own which will sometime cost them in the end. For example, they want to do stay outside for whole night during a friend's birthday party because they are allowed to go anywhere they want. As a result, this will tend to lose interest in studies which then effects on their results. Also they become selfish about their needs and money.
On the other hand, having independency to decide your basic life matter generates confidence in children since their childhood. Although they are young enough to decide exactly what they will do in future, this confidence gives them a way towards it. Such as, if a student is allowed to participate in sports at school level it will help him to decide about his career. Cosequently, this confident kid can perform far good in several fields of life.
In my opinion, there should be a balnace of both views. Such as decisions about food and clothes should be given to children. While in term of entertainment, various restrictions should be applied. For example, no night stay should be allowed to them. This will be helpful to make them a better citizen.
In conclusions, I would say a middle way should be followed while raising kids so they should always stay in limits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear personal position: children should choose food and clothes, while entertainment needs limits. The examples about staying out late and joining school sports are relevant and help explain the possible risks and benefits. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the link between choosing to stay out and losing interest in studies is not clearly established, and the claim that children become selfish about money needs further support. Your opinion is clear, but the conclusion mainly repeats the idea of a “middle way” rather than showing how parents can balance children’s choices with guidance. Develop each example and explain the reasoning behind it more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. This makes the discussion easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help distinguish the arguments. The progression is generally logical, but some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “As a result” introduces a consequence that is not fully explained, while “Such as” is used to introduce examples in a way that does not form a complete sentence. The opinion paragraph also shifts quickly from food and clothes to entertainment restrictions. To strengthen cohesion, connect each example explicitly to the point it supports and use referencing and transitions more naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “selfish,” “confidence,” “restrictions,” and “career,” and the reader can generally understand your meaning. There are also attempts to use less common expressions, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “self centerd,” “sense of seniorship,” “independency,” and “perform far good” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Spelling errors such as “Cosequently” and “balnace” also reduce accuracy. Aim to use familiar words precisely before reaching for more elaborate terms, and check spelling and collocations. For example, “develop a sense of responsibility” would communicate your point more clearly than “develop a sense of seniorship.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “although,” “since,” and “which,” and your main ideas are usually understandable. However, some sentence structures and grammatical patterns are inaccurate. Examples include “other think” instead of “others think,” “decisions those are ultimately related to them,” and “they want to do stay outside.” There are also problems with verb forms and sentence construction in “this will tend to lose interest in studies” and “it will help him to decide about his career.” The opening sentence also needs a clearer construction around “by their own.” Work on forming complete clauses, using appropriate verb patterns, and checking agreement and articles. More accurate complex sentences would make your reasoning easier to follow.
