IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Many people argue that allowing children to choose their own diet, clothes or entertainment options will result in them becoming self centered. Others believe that, children also have right to make decisions about matters that affect their personal lives. As far as I am concerned, children must follow rules set by their parents while also being rewarded for demonstrating resposible behavior.
On the one hand, giving children too much freedom might have some detrimental effects on them. Children are always dragged towards things that offer them immediate pleasure without thinking about the consequences. For example, if they are allowed to choose their own meals, they would prefer to have fast foods without choosing healthy options. Similarly, if they are given freedom while choosing entertainment, they might prefer some inappropriate content without having much concern about it. In the long run, if they are not trained to value other people's opinion they might turn out selfish.
On the other hand, allowing kids to take their own decissions might help them to become confident and responsible. If they are given freedom to choose their attire, they might feel more comfortable. By doing so, they will learn to take decisions and face the consequences. Meanwhile, they will get interest to eat or to participate in extra curriculumn activities.
In my opinion, children can participate in making decisions provided that a clear boundary is set by the parents. For example, they can choose their meal from some given healthy options or they can enjoy entertainment chosen by their own in a given time limit.
To conclude, a balanced approach between freedom and independance can enhance the mental development of the kids while ensuring their betterment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and give a clear position: children should make choices within boundaries set by parents. The examples about choosing healthy meals and entertainment within a time limit make your opinion relevant and practical. Your discussion of the risks is also supported by examples of fast food and inappropriate content. This meets the task well, with some elements developed more fully than others: the first view is linked to selfishness, but the explanation of how everyday choices lead children to disregard others remains general. The point that children may gain confidence and responsibility is relevant, but could be extended with a specific example or explanation. To strengthen the response further, develop the consequences and support each main claim more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your own position, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” help readers understand the stages of the argument. Examples are generally placed beside the claims they support. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and the paragraph beginning “On the other hand” moves quickly from clothing choices to decision-making and then to food and activities without fully connecting those points. The conclusion also repeats the balanced approach rather than drawing together the main reasoning. Use more varied transitions and clearer links between each example and its central idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “detrimental effects,” “immediate pleasure,” “consequences,” and “clear boundary.” These choices help express the contrast between unrestricted choice and parental guidance. There are also some inaccurate or awkward choices that limit precision, such as “get interest to eat,” “entertainment chosen by their own,” and “extra curriculumn activities.” Spelling errors in “resposible,” “decissions,” and “independance” are noticeable, although the intended meaning remains clear. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully. For example, children can “develop an interest in” activities, and entertainment can be “chosen by themselves.” More precise phrasing would make the argument sound more fluent and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if they are allowed to choose their own meals” and a concession in “provided that a clear boundary is set.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the errors do not generally obstruct understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. In “Others believe that, children also have right,” the comma is unnecessary and the article is missing before “right.” “If they are given freedom” also needs an article or a different construction, such as “given the freedom.” In “they will get interest to eat,” the grammatical pattern is not correct. Continue practising articles and verb patterns, and proofread punctuation, while retaining the complex structures you already attempt.
