IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a small area of land in 2000 and after its redevelopment in 2026.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The provided maps show an area of land before and after development.
The key changes are conversion of open field, store and picnic area into play ground and tennis court, car park and cafe respectively.
In 2000, the land has a woodland to north west corner.Down to it is a large open field area. To the west of this is a pond with a picnic area nearby. Store is located to the bottom east west corner just along with access road.
After redeveloping the land, there are certain modifications made. The
open field area has now been converted into a playground and a tennis court. The woodland area and pond remained same. But the picnic area is now a cafe and car park is build in place of store. Access road has been elongated and three more paths are added. From access road a west path is built and connected to main path passing by pond and joins east path for access to cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main transformation from open land and older facilities to recreational and visitor amenities, and you correctly note that the woodland and pond remain. The overview is relevant, while the later description adds useful details about the new paths. However, some locations are misreported or unclear: in 2000, the pond is in the centre, not west of the field, and the picnic area is in the south-east; the store is in the south-west, not the “bottom east west corner.” The 2026 account also omits the playground and tennis court locations and does not clearly state that the café replaces the picnic area. More precise comparisons and accurate positioning would make the coverage more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic overall structure: an introduction, a summary of the main changes, and descriptions of the two plans. This gives the reader a general sense of the comparison. However, progression is weakened by abrupt transitions, including the standalone “The” after “After redeveloping the land,” and by unclear references such as “Down to it” and “To the west of this.” The description also shifts between locations and changes without a consistent route through the map. Organise the details by area—for example, north-west, centre, then south—and use clear links such as “whereas” and “in contrast” to make comparisons easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “converted,” “remained,” “access road,” and “paths,” so the reader can understand the general redevelopment. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or awkward, such as “certain modifications made,” “passing by pond,” and “elongated” for the road. There are also spelling and form issues in “play ground,” “cafe,” and “build,” which reduce accuracy and polish. Aim for precise location and change language, such as “was replaced by,” “is situated in,” and “runs alongside.” Check compound nouns and standard spellings, and avoid repeating general terms like “area” when a specific feature name is available.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including “The woodland area and pond remained same” and the sentence describing how the paths connect. Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in articles, prepositions, tense, and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “a woodland to north west corner” needs clearer article and preposition use, while “remained same” requires “remained the same.” The sentence beginning “From access road a west path is built” is also awkwardly structured, and punctuation is inconsistent, particularly where sentences run together after “same.” Practise accurate past-tense descriptions of the 2000 plan and use complete, clearly punctuated sentences for the 2026 layout.
