IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The question “Should full time education become mandatory for children until the age of 18 years?” is being debated in many places. Some people argue that all young people should continue their studies until they reach this age.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Education is important to every child. This is where the second home is built since young learners are starting to learn things about socialization, academic and skills. In recent years, some people believe that students should perseve their studies until they reach the age of 18. In my opinion, it should be mandatory for children to have a full time education until they reach the legal age.

One of the reasons is that young learners will be able to attain the knowledge and skills they should gain in the early years. Students who attend a full time education tend to be prepared for the future. For instance, if the students have an adequate knowledge to repair broken fans, airconditioner or even electric fan, they can fix it without asking help from anyone. As a result, they can apply their skills in the coming years.

In addition, students will have opportunities to be employed to companies that they may apply what all the things they have learned from their studies. For example, senior high school students who are trained for cookery have a big chance to be employed in restraurants or cruise ship. They can apply the necessary skills they have learned throughout the school year. Consequently, it is easier and more convenient for them to find for jobs.

In conclusion, I firmly agree that attending schools should commence in the early ages of the learners and should continue until they reach the legal age. Ultimately, students ill benefit from this as the skills and knowledge acquired from the school will be applied in the real-life situations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that full-time education should continue until 18, and the conclusion restates this view. You give two relevant reasons—gaining practical skills and improving employment prospects—and illustrate them with examples about repairing appliances and cookery students. However, the first example focuses on skills that may not clearly require full-time schooling, and the link between compulsory education and better employment is asserted rather than fully explained. The response addresses the question, but the reasons are not developed equally or in enough depth. To strengthen it, explain why education should be compulsory for every young person, acknowledge a possible alternative such as vocational training or work, and show how your examples support your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from learning practical skills to employment is easy to follow, and signposts such as “One of the reasons,” “In addition,” and “In conclusion” help the reader identify each stage. This organisation is effective, though some linking is mechanical and the connections within paragraphs could be more precise. For example, “As a result” introduces a consequence after the appliance-repair example, but the relationship to compulsory education is not fully established. The phrase “apply what all the things they have learned” also makes the reference unclear. Use more varied transitions and make each example’s connection to the main argument explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “socialization,” “adequate knowledge,” “employed,” and “necessary skills,” and the reader can generally understand your ideas. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “senior high school” and “cookery.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “perseve their studies,” “a full time education,” “find for jobs,” and “the second home is built.” Spelling errors such as “airconditioner,” “restraurants,” and “ill” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Learn common collocations for education and employment, and proofread spelling and word forms before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including conditional and relative structures, as in “if the students have an adequate knowledge…” and “companies that they may apply…”. This shows some range, and the main message remains understandable. However, some sentence patterns are not controlled accurately. For example, “students will have opportunities to be employed to companies that they may apply” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the clauses, while “students who attend a full time education” uses an awkward article and noun pattern. The opening sentence, “This is where the second home is built,” is also difficult to interpret grammatically. Practise forming clear complex sentences with accurate clause links, articles, and prepositions, and check that each sentence expresses one complete relationship.
