Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing this letter to address an ongoing issues regarding number 24 bus from Northfield to the city centre. I regularly commute in this route and everything was fine until last month but recently due to delayed service it has been difficult to plan my journeys. I would like to bring your attention towards this issue and hope a planned measure would be implemented to improve the service. Surprise inspection of timing of the bus drivers would help tackle this situatiation.

My workplace is at Yorkdale which is one stop ahead of city centre and I live near Northfield road. So, I have to take this bus twice a day and for 5 day a week. I don't have a private vehicle and this is the only bus service that is available in this route because of that I have no other option than taking this bus.

However, due to delay in the service of this bus I have been facing a lot of trouble. One of the major trouble is that I am being late to work everyday eventhough I have been taking earlier buses still I can't reach my workplace at time due to which I have been summoned to HR office and have got the final warning before my termination.

I would like to propose an idea which might tackle this situation. Local transit office should train drivers appropriately and give them a session regarding time management. Eventhough, there is not much traffic in the road but due to bus drivers frequent long stops at the bus stop is creating this problem. I would recommend transit authority should do surprise inspections and take actions against drivers who are slacking off on their work.

Finally, I would like to request you to look into this situation because many commuters have been affected by this problem. If effective measures such as frequent inspections are implemented then I believe this problem will be solved.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requirements: you explain that you commute to Yorkdale and rely on this route, describe delays that make you late and have led to a final warning at work, and propose driver training and inspections. The purpose is clear throughout, and the personal consequence gives the complaint useful support. Your suggestions are relevant, although the explanation that drivers’ long stops are the cause is asserted rather than illustrated with a specific example, and the proposed measures focus mainly on driver behaviour rather than broader service reliability. To strengthen the response further, explain how the company could monitor punctuality or communicate delays to passengers, and connect each proposed change directly to the problem it would address.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable structure, moving from the reason for writing to your travel needs, the impact of delays, proposed solutions, and a closing request. Paragraphs generally group related information, and connectors such as “However” and “Finally” help signal shifts. However, progression is weakened by some repetition: the opening already mentions delays and inspections, then these points recur in later paragraphs. Several links are also awkward or unclear, including “because of that I have no other option” and the transition from driver training to long stops. Use clearer topic sentences and reserve each paragraph for one main purpose; this would make the sequence more controlled and reduce the mechanical repetition of the same complaint and solution.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a formal complaint, including “commute,” “final warning,” “transit authority,” and “frequent inspections.” These choices communicate the situation and its seriousness. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however, such as “address an ongoing issues,” “in this route,” “bring your attention towards this issue,” and “slacking off on their work.” There are also spelling errors, including “situatiation” and “eventhough.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and formality. Aim for standard complaint-letter phrasing and check spelling carefully; for example, “raise this issue with you” is more natural than “bring your attention towards this issue.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “until,” “because,” and “even though,” and the main message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors recur, though. For example, “an ongoing issues” has an article–number mismatch, “for 5 day a week” has incorrect plural and article use, and “I am being late” uses an unsuitable verb form for a repeated problem. The sentence beginning “Local transit office should train drivers” also needs an article, while “I would recommend transit authority should…” has an incomplete grammatical pattern. Review articles, plurals, and verb forms, and use patterns such as “I recommend that the authority…” or “I would recommend that the authority…”. Breaking up a few long sentences would also help you control punctuation.
