IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently helped your company organise an event at a hotel. Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter:

– Provide details about the event
– Mention what you particularly liked about the hotel
– Suggest areas for improvement.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I'm writing this letter to share brief details about the event. On top of that, it was a great responsibility to align with the possible factors that we discussed before arranging it. The hotel is near the office space on High Street, 313, 2nd floor, Vancouver. We have booked it from 4- 9 p.m. this coming Saturday, November 14. Food options are incredible at this hotel. Ambious is cozy.

We chose that hotel for its formal environment, food options, location, and especially its customer-centric staff, which really caught my attention when I was reading reviews online.

Regretfully, one thing: that hotel doesn't allow loud music, parties, or drinking. So, we have to compromise on these things for this event. Even so, I believe that this would not make a big impact on our event.

Hopefully everything will go as planned. I will contact you if I have another question to clarify on the hotel's end.

Your Faithfully,

Nisha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter covers the main requested areas: it gives the event time and date, comments positively on the food and staff, and raises a concern about restrictions on music, parties, and drinking. However, the event itself is not clearly described beyond its timing, and the improvement point is indirect: the restrictions are presented as a compromise rather than a specific request for change. The opening also does not follow the required “Dear Sir / Madam,” and the closing “Your Faithfully” is not appropriate in this form. To strengthen the response, identify the event and its purpose, explain what worked especially well with a concrete example, and make a polite, clear suggestion to the manager.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a generally understandable sequence: event details come first, followed by positive comments, a concern, and a closing. Paragraph breaks help separate these points, and links such as “Even so” make the relationship between the restriction and the writer’s view clear. Some connections are less effective, however. “On top of that” does not clearly connect to the opening, while the sentence about the hotel’s location and booking time is followed abruptly by “Food options are incredible” and “Ambious is cozy.” The final paragraph also shifts to future contact without a clear link to the requested feedback. Group related details more deliberately and use references that make each point’s purpose clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

There is adequate vocabulary for the topic, including “formal environment,” “customer-centric staff,” “food options,” and “compromise.” These choices communicate the general meaning, and the writer attempts some less common expressions. However, several word choices or phrases are inaccurate or unclear, notably “Ambious is cozy” and “align with the possible factors,” which make the intended meaning difficult to identify. “Share brief details” and “caught my attention” are also less precise than language suited to a formal feedback letter. Aim for natural collocations and specific terms for the event and hotel facilities; this would make the message more precise while retaining the range already attempted.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the relative clause in “which really caught my attention” and the contrast introduced by “Even so.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation issues reduce accuracy. For example, “We have booked it from 4- 9 p.m.” has awkward punctuation and an unclear time expression, while “Your Faithfully” has incorrect capitalization and form in the closing. The sentence beginning “On top of that, it was a great responsibility…” is also structurally difficult to follow. Use clearer sentence patterns, check articles and verb forms, and punctuate time ranges consistently to improve control.
