Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/Ma’am,
First of all, I would like to thank you and your staff for helping me organize the charity event for the recent flash floods that happened in South Africa.
The event started with lightning of diya by our chief guest Mr Mukesh Ambani the owner of Reliance Industries and some refreshments. After that the charity event started with the guests donating a lot for helping the victims by buying antique items like furniture, lamps , show pieces and then some wonderful dresses by the best designer in town Miss Natasha Kapoor. The event went very smoothly and everyone was really touched by the situation and were donating openly. The guests really supported and were the finest audience in the whole event. The thing that I really liked was the cleanliness of the banquet hall and the staff was very friendly and helpful. And the guests really enjoyed the starters and the dinner. The owner of the hotel also stepped up and donated $5000 to the needy.
The area which needs to be improved is the seating arrangement which was a little bit congested. Because of that it was difficult for guests to move out of their chair. If you can take this issue into consideration it would be helpful for future events.
Thankyou,
Kashish

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the charity event, highlighting positive aspects of the hotel (cleanliness and staff), and suggesting an improvement regarding the seating arrangement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the narrative about the event could be slightly more concise to allow for more depth in the feedback section. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic; for instance, the letter relies heavily on simple conjunctions like 'and' to connect ideas. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition') to create a more sophisticated structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'lightning of diya' (which should be 'lighting of the diya') and 'donating openly'. While the student attempts to use specific vocabulary related to the event, such as 'banquet hall' and 'charity event', the range is somewhat limited. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive adjectives.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the staff was' (should be 'were' when referring to the collective staff members) and 'move out of their chair' (should be plural 'chairs'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage errors throughout. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would improve the score.
