Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I hope this email finds you well. My name is Harwinder Singh, I recently organized a business meeting in your hotel, last Monday at 2nd floor in the conference hall . I am writing this email to appreciate you and your staff members. Moreover, I would like to suggest some improvements that your hotel may consider to upgrade.

Firstly, I like the customer service gave by staff members as well as cleanness in the hotel room and corridors, usually hotels won't keep corridors clean and maintained.

However, their are few suggestion those I think will boost your hotel's sales not only this but also help to improve customer experience. Arrange a lift in your hotel, which will give convenience to people to reach different floors. Furthermore, it will great for people with disabilities.

I hope your hotel will work on these recommended changes, I know it is cheap to upgrade in a hotel.

Best regards,

Harwinder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, when mentioning the event, you only state it was a 'business meeting' without providing any specific context or details that would make the letter more realistic. Similarly, the suggestion regarding the lift is a bit brief. To improve, try to expand on your points with more descriptive language or specific examples to fully develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', and 'Furthermore' to transition between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor errors in sentence structure and punctuation, such as the comma splice in the first paragraph ('...Harwinder Singh, I recently...'). Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'not only this but also' which lacks a clear antecedent. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring sentences are correctly joined would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'appreciate', 'convenience', and 'disabilities' correctly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'cleanness' (should be 'cleanliness') and 'give convenience' (should be 'provide convenience'). You also use the word 'cheap' to describe the upgrades, which is slightly informal and imprecise in this context. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary related to hospitality and business events.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'the customer service gave by staff' (should be 'provided by'), 'their are few suggestion' (should be 'there are a few suggestions'), and 'it will great' (should be 'it would be great'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not prevent the message from being understood, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a stronger grasp of basic subject-verb agreement and article usage.
