Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

Hope you are doing great. I am writing to express my gratitude in honour of holding a grand celebration of our company's 20th anniversary at your hotel.

The party was held on 15th of this month from 6pm until 10 pm. Around fifty people were be the part of this celebration. I personally liked the ambience of your hotel which was very peaceful and appealing. Additional service was quite appreciable, every staff member was so humble.

One thing that I wanted to add that was, seating area and decoration was not according to the theme of our celebration. Some of the guests who were VIPs could not enjoy themselves, as there was something reliable was missing. Moreover they were annoying as there was not enough seating arrangement.

I hope you will improve these services at your property and give more smooth experience to your customers in future.

Thanks,

Kind Regards

Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the mention of 'VIPs' and 'something reliable was missing' is vague and does not clearly explain the nature of the problem, which hinders the reader's understanding. While the tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, the lack of specific detail regarding the 'theme' or the 'seating arrangement' issues makes the feedback less actionable for the manager. To improve, ensure that complaints are described with enough clarity and context so that the recipient fully understands the specific nature of the dissatisfaction.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, the transition 'One thing that I wanted to add that was' is wordy and slightly unnatural. Additionally, the referencing in the third paragraph ('they were annoying') is ambiguous, as it is unclear whether 'they' refers to the guests or the hotel staff/situation. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun references would enhance the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. There are some attempts at more sophisticated language, such as 'ambience' and 'appreciable', which are used correctly. However, there are instances of awkward word choices, such as 'in honour of holding' and 'give more smooth experience', which sound unnatural. The phrase 'something reliable was missing' is also confusing and does not convey the intended meaning effectively. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions that are natural in a business correspondence context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'Around fifty people were be the part of this celebration' (incorrect verb form) and 'there was not enough seating arrangement' (article/pluralization error). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor issues with sentence construction. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these frequent small errors prevent the writing from reaching a higher level of accuracy.
