Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my gratitude to your hotel and staff for giving your valuable support to success our event which held in last week.

There was an awareness campaign for personal support workers about fall prevention strategies among senior citizens in long term care homes organized by Lifemark Health group. It held on 21st of July as a evening event and provided dinner for our participants.

The hall and table arrangements were perfect what I expect and it was very eye-catching for everyone, specially posters and flower decorations. The most important thing was the sound system, when my team was presenting the short drama, everyone could hear it wherever they were i n the hall.

However, I have notice few things that should improved such as, lightening system and front door arrangement. Some ceiling lights were not enough in the dining area and pool area, where we perform the stage drama. Although, all participant could hear the drama some people could not see properly due to darkness in some areas. Moreover, entrance decoration is not match with our theme, as I planned. I asked for two banners to either side of the door, however, there was only one banner.

I really appreciate for your immense support which help us to organize this event. Please give my regards to all your staff who support us to succeed this event. I hope to arrange the next event at your hotel in December. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Nipuni Rajapaksha.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The event details (date, purpose, and nature of the event) are clear, and your feedback regarding the lighting and signage is specific. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening and closing statements are more naturally phrased; for instance, 'giving your valuable support to success our event' is slightly awkward. Overall, the task is fully addressed with relevant and well-developed ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Although' to connect your ideas. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure follows a standard formal letter format. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'it', 'this') is always precise to avoid any ambiguity for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'awareness campaign', 'fall prevention strategies', and 'immense support'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'success our event' (should be 'ensure the success of our event') and 'lightening system' (should be 'lighting system'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more precise usage. You have attempted to use topic-specific vocabulary related to event management, which is positive.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and word forms, such as 'which held in last week' (should be 'which was held last week') and 'I have notice few things' (should be 'I have noticed a few things'). Additionally, there are some issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your control over basic verb tenses and sentence construction will help improve your score.
