Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to you regarding to an event organised for my company at your hotel.

At first, this event was my companies annual promotions program, where we invite all the head members of our organization. Additionally, during this event all my colleagues receive bonuses, promotions and appraisals.

This year I helped the team personally to book your hotel as it has a great reputation on social media platforms as well as great reviews on its website. However, all the services provided by hotel was commendable, but particularly I really enjoyed the live music during the dinner time as all the songs sung by singer were really soothing and relaxing which helped to make the event more memorable.

Therefore, I would suggest some areas to improve, such as, there should be no parking fess for hotel customers and hotel can consider to provide some discount on hotel rooms after such events. At last, I am thankful for the great time and I hope you will consider my suggestions.

Yours Faithfully,

Sukhmanpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: providing details about the event, mentioning what you liked, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail about the event itself (e.g., the number of attendees or the nature of the promotions) to make the letter feel more authentic and fully developed. However, the response successfully covers all requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'However', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For instance, 'At first' is not the most natural way to introduce the background of the event; 'To begin with' or 'The event was' would be more appropriate. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is effective.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'commendable', 'reputation', and 'appraisals'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'parking fess' (should be 'fees') and 'all the services provided by hotel was' (should be 'the hotel were'). While you successfully communicate your message, the vocabulary is functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring accuracy in pluralization and article usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'regarding to' (should be 'regarding'), 'my companies annual' (should be 'my company's'), and 'all the songs sung by singer' (should be 'the singer'). Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'services... was'. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic articles and possessive apostrophes would significantly improve your accuracy.
