Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Hotel Manager,

I am writing this to share my experience on the recent event that was organized at your hotel. It was my company's 20th annual townhall meeting and I would like to appreciate you and your team on behalf of my company for putting every efffort to make this event memorable for us. Everything was perfectly organized and was on time. We had a feedback session at the end of the our event and we received a highly positive response from everyone.

Moreover, special thanks to your staff especially servers as they were really professional and welcoming to our guests.

Furthmore, I presonally enjoyed the food and how it was presented to our guests. Nevertheless, one area of improvement I would like to highlight is the lack of parking space. Even I struggled to park my car when I reached the venue.

Thank you for making our 20th annual meeting sucessful.

Best Wishes,

Navdeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting an area for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, although the development of the event details could be slightly more descriptive to fully meet the criteria for a higher band. However, the purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the reader is left with a complete understanding of the situation and the writer's feedback.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the event overview to specific praise and finally to constructive criticism. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Nevertheless' are used effectively to link ideas. While the structure is sound, the flow could be slightly more sophisticated with a wider variety of linking phrases. Overall, the information is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with terms like 'memorable', 'professional', and 'welcoming' used correctly. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'efffort', 'Furthmore', 'presonally', and 'sucessful', which slightly detract from the overall quality. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly, but it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band. The word choice is functional and accurate enough to ensure the reader understands the feedback without difficulty.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound, though there are some minor errors, such as 'I am writing this to share my experience on the recent event' (should be 'about') and 'the our event'. Punctuation is generally correct, and the errors present do not impede communication. To improve, the writer should focus on proofreading for small grammatical slips and aim for a slightly more varied sentence structure to demonstrate greater control over complex forms.
