Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to exude my heartfelt appreciation for the exceptional experience of hosting an event for my company at your hotel. I chose your hotel for the organization of a very special event for my company and could not resist myself to acknowledge the outstanding quality of service we received.

To provide some details of our event, I and some of my senior company mates booked your hotel's meeting room and some rooms for our delegates on 8th July, 2026. The purpose of our gathering was the celebration of our successful foreign project completion. Since it was a significant milestone for our company we wanted t opt for a place that could offer a memorable atmosphere and your hotel perfectly met our expectations.

The culinary experience was truly exceptional and left a long lasting impression on all of us. The menu offered a range of diversity which made our delegates quite comfortable in choosing any option from their cuisines. In addition, the portion sizes were generous. Moreover, the food served was not only visually appealing but also bursting with rich flavors and freshness.

One area of improvement I would like to mention is the speed of service. The service was a bit slower than expected so I think it might need some amendment.

Overall, it was nice experience overall.

Yours Sincerly,

ABC

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the event, such as the date and purpose, highlighted the culinary experience as a positive aspect, and suggested an area for improvement regarding service speed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, and the letter follows the required structure. To reach a higher band, ensure that the suggestions for improvement are slightly more specific or detailed, perhaps by explaining how the slow service impacted the event, which would add further depth to your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You used cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Overall' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve further, you could vary your cohesive devices even more to avoid a slightly mechanical feel in the transition between sentences, but overall, the flow is clear and coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using phrases like 'heartfelt appreciation', 'exceptional experience', and 'significant milestone'. The word choice is generally precise and appropriate for the context. There are a few minor issues, such as 'exude my heartfelt appreciation' (which is slightly unnatural; 'express' would be better) and 'senior company mates' (which is a bit informal; 'colleagues' would be more professional). However, these do not impede communication. You show an ability to use less common vocabulary, which is a strength, and your spelling is accurate throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as 'I and some of my senior company mates' (should be 'Some of my senior colleagues and I') and 'it was nice experience overall' (missing an article: 'a nice experience'). Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is handled well. The grammatical control is sufficient to maintain a professional tone throughout the correspondence.
