Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing this letter regarding an event organised by company in your hotel last week.

it was the gathering of 30 people in the hall B including decoration, music and food not only this but also by firm host a special Indian chef .

Moreover, not only me but my other teammates love the atmosphere of the hotel i love the decoration done by you guys. The music guy picked so good songs for us that everybody enjoy so much. Even some of the senior individuals in my company admire it.

However, i have some suggestions for you as the food is very average. Because it is too cold to serve to guest along with it many dishes has some extra salt in it . therefore i believe such things can be improved in future bookings

I hope you ill keep an eye in future to maintain your goodwill.

Your Faithful,

Mohit Batish

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the event is a bit fragmented, and the suggestions for improvement are brief. While the tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, the lack of detail prevents it from reaching a higher band. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is informed about the specific context of the event, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Therefore', though some are used slightly awkwardly or with minor punctuation errors. The transition between the positive feedback and the suggestions for improvement is clear. However, the overall flow is occasionally interrupted by grammatical issues and sentence structure limitations. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the letter would benefit from a more sophisticated range of linking words to improve the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at more descriptive language, such as 'atmosphere' and 'goodwill', but the range is somewhat limited. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'The music guy' or 'some of the senior individuals'. There are also minor errors in word formation and collocation, such as 'the food is very average' (which is acceptable but simple) and 'maintain your goodwill'. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the intended meaning, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('many dishes has'), article usage, and punctuation (e.g., 'i' is often not capitalised, and there are missing commas). Some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as 'it was the gathering of 30 people... not only this but also by firm host a special Indian chef'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and sentence construction would significantly improve the score.
