Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my appreciation for the excellent service your hotel provided for corporate event that our firm organize last week. All the amenities well available for the people who attended the event.

There were numerous things that i liked about your service, the cuisines was delicious, the ambiance was great, the place was neat and clean during the time of event. The one thing that astonished me was all the things was available on one call. In addition, not only the employee enjoy the event but all the senior management appreciate the work that was done by hotel service.

Although all the facilities was available, there was a few things that needs to be addressed. Parking was quite daunting to find out because the lack of availability of the space. Furthermore, music system was not up to date . Everyone find daunting to play games and enjoy dance.

Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the parking was 'daunting', you could have provided a more specific suggestion for how the hotel might improve this, such as implementing a valet service or expanding the lot. The letter is clear and the purpose is well-defined, meeting the requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Although', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by minor errors in referencing and sentence structure, such as 'the one thing that astonished me was all the things was available'. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'amenities', 'ambiance', and 'astonished'. There are some instances of word choice errors or awkward collocations, such as 'the cuisines was delicious' (should be 'the cuisine') and 'parking was quite daunting to find out' (should be 'difficult to find'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring subject-verb agreement when using collective nouns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'all the things was available', 'all the facilities was available', 'there was a few things'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage errors throughout the text. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your message. To reach a higher band, you should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, specifically ensuring that plural subjects are paired with plural verbs.
