Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I hope you are doing well, I am writing on behalf of our company to take this opportunity to thank you management team and the hotel. We had an event hosted at your hotel for our company's 25th anniversary with around 85 people on the weekend.

I personally loved the minimalistic decoration and specially the catering service from food to drinks everything was as I imagined. However, we had an issue that I wanted to address, I witnessed multiple times few of the servers being distracted on the phone which I found unprofessional. I wouldn't had addressed the issue unless the hadn't spoiled our client's evening.

What happened was is that due to cellphone use one of your server accidentally spilled drinks on our guests which ruined their clothes and on top of that this incident intrepted the event speech by our CEO.

I hope you would look into this matter and make sure this issue is solved.

Thank you,

Fiona Shah

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of the 'areas for improvement' section could be slightly more professional in its phrasing to ensure the tone remains constructive rather than purely accusatory. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'What happened was' to transition between ideas. While the structure is clear, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. For instance, the transition between the positive feedback and the complaint is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'minimalistic decoration', 'catering service', and 'unprofessional'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'intrepted' (interrupted) and 'your server' (one of your servers). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or precision that would push the score into the higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations and checking for spelling accuracy will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical slips that occur throughout the text, such as 'I wouldn't had addressed' (should be 'wouldn't have addressed'), 'the hadn't spoiled' (should be 'they hadn't spoiled'), and 'one of your server' (should be 'servers'). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in the first sentence with a comma splice. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and modal verb usage will be beneficial.
