Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the excellent service your hotel provided during our company's annual corporate event last weekend. Around 150 employees and several business clients attend the event, which included a presentation , an awards ceremony, and a formal dinner.

I was particularly impressed by the professionalism of your staff. They were polite, attentive and ensure that everything ran smoothly throughout the day. The conference hall was spacious, well organised, and equipped with modern audiovisual facilities. Moreover, the food was delicious, with a wide variety of dishes that catered to different dietary preferences. Many of our guests praised both the quality of the meals and the elegant atmosphere.

Despite our overall satisfaction, I would like to suggest a few improvements. The Wi-Fi connection was occasionally unreliable, which affected part of our presentation. In addition, the air conditioning could have been more consistent, as the room became rather warm during the afternoon.

Thank you once again for your excellent hospitality. I look forward to using your hotel for future events.

Yours faithfully,

Aesha Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You provided clear details about the event (150 employees, presentation, awards, dinner), highlighted specific positive aspects (staff professionalism, facilities, food), and offered constructive suggestions for improvement (Wi-Fi and air conditioning). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, and the transition between the positive feedback and the suggestions for improvement is smooth. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Despite our overall satisfaction', and 'In addition' effectively to link your points. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent, making the letter easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 8.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context. Phrases such as 'sincere appreciation', 'dietary preferences', and 'elegant atmosphere' show a level of sophistication. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, there is room to incorporate more precise or less common collocations to reach the highest band. The current range is sufficient to convey your message clearly and professionally without any noticeable errors in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which are generally used with good control. There is a minor tense error in the second sentence: 'attend' should be 'attended' to maintain consistency with the past tense used throughout the letter. Additionally, 'ensure' should be 'ensured' to match the past tense of 'were'. Despite these occasional slips, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly to support the clarity of your writing.
