Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to inform you about the recent even that was organized at your hotel on the 14th July. It was for an Annual meeting that is held every year for employees who did extraordinary work for the company, where they get prizes and medals for outperforming themselves. Followed by a list of events such as; concerts, karaoke, games and dinner at the end of the night.
It is certain to say that the variety of food that was promised was all there and our guest really loved it, the quality and the taste was astonishing. We have received feedback from the employees and the Supervisors as well about the whole event and it was outstanding. The staff was friendly and were helpful throughout the event, no complaints there!
However, the one thing that was unsatisfactory was your Centralized Air condition which was not working at all. Since you know in summers how hot it gets within a space which is full of people, even after complaining several times to your manager nothing was done about it which made hard for our Team to Enjoy the event. I hope that this matter should be looked into and I hear back from you as soon as possible and some arrangements should be made for this inconvenience.
Yours truly,
Rishabh K

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the ideas are developed sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor details, such as the specific nature of the 'prizes and medals', are integrated more smoothly into the narrative flow rather than appearing as a list.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into three distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the event description to positive feedback and finally to the complaint. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'Since', to link your ideas. To improve, try to avoid fragmented sentences like 'Followed by a list of events...', which should be connected to the previous sentence to improve flow. Additionally, ensure that referencing is consistent throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'extraordinary', 'outperforming', and 'unsatisfactory'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'even' instead of 'event' and 'Centralized Air condition' (which should be 'centralized air conditioning'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. Expanding your range to include more precise collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'It is certain to say' (a slightly unnatural phrasing), 'made hard for our Team' (missing 'it'), and 'I hope that this matter should be looked into' (which is slightly awkward). Punctuation is generally functional, though the use of a semicolon after 'events' is incorrect. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
