Student answer (Band 9.0)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my gratitude for the exceptional service provided by your team during our recent event held at your hotel. The event was a great success, and we truly appreciate the effort that went into making it memorable.

We hosted a corporate seminar with approximately 100 attendees, which included presentations, networking sessions, and a formal dinner. The spacious conference room was perfect for our needs, and the audio-visual equipment worked flawlessly, contributing to the smooth flow of the event.

One aspect that stood out to us was the professionalism and attentiveness of your staff. From the moment we arrived, they were welcoming and accommodating, ensuring that all our requirements were met promptly. The catering service was also commendable; our guests enjoyed the delicious meals and refreshments provided throughout the day.

While we were very pleased with our experience, I would like to suggest a couple of areas for improvement. Firstly, the Wi-Fi connection in the conference room was somewhat inconsistent, which posed challenges during our presentations. Enhancing the connectivity would greatly benefit future events. Additionally, it would be helpful to have clearer signage directing guests to the various facilities within the hotel, as some attendees had difficulty finding their way around.

Thank you once again for your outstanding service. We look forward to the possibility of hosting future events at your hotel.

Warm regards

The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the event (a corporate seminar with 100 attendees), highlighted specific positive aspects (staff professionalism and catering), and provided constructive suggestions for improvement (Wi-Fi connectivity and signage). The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully met all requirements of the task with a professional and polite approach.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 9.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the text easy to follow. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'One aspect that stood out', 'While we were very pleased', and 'Additionally'. The transition between the positive feedback and the suggestions for improvement is smooth and natural. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter, contributing to a professional and coherent structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 9.0

You demonstrate a wide range of vocabulary that is both natural and precise. Phrases such as 'exceptional service', 'accommodating', 'commendable', and 'inconsistent' are used accurately and fit the context of a formal business letter perfectly. The language is sophisticated and shows a high level of control. There are no errors in word choice or collocation, and the vocabulary used is well-suited to the task of providing professional feedback to a hotel manager.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 9.0

The writing displays a high level of grammatical accuracy with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Your use of punctuation is precise, and the sentence construction is varied, which keeps the reader engaged. There are no grammatical errors, and the control over tense and agreement is excellent. The letter flows well, and the sophisticated structure of your sentences, such as 'From the moment we arrived, they were welcoming and accommodating', shows a strong command of English grammar.
