Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Carlo,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for an event that I organised at your esteemed hotel for my company.

The event was held on 30th May. The event was mainly focused on strategic plans, such as time management, team management and current trends, which is really necessary for our company growth.

What I specifically love about the hotel services your staff has provided us. From the delicious food and the services extended by your hotel, is really appreciated. The conference room, audio-visual helped us to concentrate on our discussion.

Although I liked everything, I would like to give you some suggestion that I noticed need improvement. The restroom was not properly cleaned, which is creating bad smell near the entrance of the hotel. In addition, you need to improve lighting at the reception area because it's really dark. I would appreciate it if you could improve these areas, as your company reputation is really crucial for me.

I hope these suggestions will help you. Thank you once again for your services.

Yours faithfully,

Deepika

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: providing event details, expressing appreciation for the hotel, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the event is quite brief, and the suggestions for improvement could be more detailed to fully satisfy the 'well-developed' criteria of higher bands. Despite this, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is fully informed of the writer's intent throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Although', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is generally clear, although the connection between the opening and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Overall, the text is coherent, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at less common collocations, such as 'heartfelt gratitude' and 'esteemed hotel'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'audio-visual helped us' (which should refer to equipment) and 'bad smell' (which is a bit informal). While the range is sufficient, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'What I specifically love about the hotel services your staff has provided us' (which is a sentence fragment) and 'which is creating bad smell' (missing an article). Despite these errors, the meaning is never in doubt, and the errors do not impede communication. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the formal tone is maintained throughout the letter.
