Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
Recently, my company organized a retirement party at your hotel. I am writing this letter to provide my feedback on the experience.
The event took place on August 23rd, 2026. We booked the banquet online a month ago. We had gathering of around 60-70 people so, we took package deal including sound system, food, decoration and photography.
To begin with, I really liked the decorations you have done. We mentioned a retro theme retirement party with red and black colour combination, undoubtedly you outweighed our expectations. The frame at the gate was so beautifully coordinated with the theme and the welcome board was mesmerizing.
I feel everything was well planned and executed. However, the food was not satisfactory. We strictly mentioned that the food should be freshly served. The appetizer were cold and mushy, pizza was half burnt and drinks were room at temperature. I firmly believe you should work on quality of the food or have a manager on site who can help in situations like this.
I hope my feedback helps you improve your services
Sincerely,
Harshneet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly provided details about the retirement party, highlighted specific aspects of the hotel you enjoyed, and offered constructive suggestions for improvement regarding the catering service. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the context and the specific nature of your complaint. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully expanded; for instance, you could have briefly mentioned the specific date or time of the event more naturally within the flow of the narrative.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single topic, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with' and 'However' to transition between ideas. While the structure is sound, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is consistently precise. For example, the transition between the event details and the positive feedback could be smoother to create a more cohesive narrative arc.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal complaint letter, such as 'mesmerizing', 'satisfactory', and 'executed'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'outweighed our expectations' (where 'exceeded' would be more natural) and 'drinks were room at temperature' (which should be 'at room temperature'). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid slight inaccuracies in word order or choice to demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical errors, such as 'We had gathering' (missing an article), 'appetizer were' (subject-verb agreement), and 'pizza was half burnt' (should be 'half-burnt'). Punctuation is generally accurate, though some sentences could be refined for better flow. The errors present are non-systematic and do not impede communication, but they do prevent the response from reaching the higher bands where the majority of sentences are error-free. Focusing on article usage and subject-verb agreement will help elevate your score.
