Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my gratitude about an event that my company organized at your hotel. The company held a two-days seminar and had around 50 people as an attendee. The program was a grand success and I truly appreciate for all the supports we get from your establishment.

I liked the arrangements and the hopitality that you provided to us. The reception and waiters were particularly accomodating. In addition, the hall provided for our program was spacious and comfortable enough for 50 guests. Screen and sound system were working perfectly.

However, we have some issues related to parking. Some of our guest complained about not getting enough parking space. Also, the lights in the hall were slightly dim. Although these problems are not big, I hope you will address them promptly.

I hope to organize many of our upcoming programs at your hotel and looking forward to meet you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Adam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The event details (a two-day seminar for 50 people) are clear, and the suggestions for improvement regarding parking and lighting are relevant and well-integrated. The response is well-structured and covers all requirements of the prompt effectively, demonstrating a clear purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the introduction to positive feedback, then to constructive criticism, and finally a closing statement. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Although' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall flow of the letter is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a coherent response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with words like 'gratitude', 'establishment', and 'accommodating' used correctly. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'hopitality' (hospitality) and 'accomodating' (accommodating). While the range is sufficient to convey the message clearly, it lacks a wider variety of more sophisticated or precise collocations that would elevate the score to a higher band. However, the errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'two-days seminar' (should be 'two-day seminar'), 'supports we get' (should be 'support we received'), and 'looking forward to meet' (should be 'looking forward to meeting'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence control is sufficient for the task, though more consistent control over verb tenses and noun phrases would improve the score.
