Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well! I am reaching out to thank you for hosting our company event at your hotel, we really appreciated the help in organising this event.
During the event, it was brought to my attention multiple times about how clean the space was as well as how kind the staff were. Additionally, the guests loved how much detail was put into the decorations, they truly felt that it highlighted the company greatly.
Although there were many positives to our experience, something that fell short on was the food service. It was a reoccurring complaint that the food was served very inconsistently, some guests got served right away, while others were left waiting for one hour to receive their first course. Though the feedback I received about the quality and taste of the food, was phenomenal! Guests were raving about how beautifully seasoned the chicken was, how tender the broccoli was cooked and how tasty the chocolate cake was.
In my opinion, for future events I would suggest for there to be better communication between the servers and the kitchen during dinner service. It seemed that the timings were off simply due to lack of communication. Otherwise, everything was perfect!
We truly appreciate your dedication and help with hosting and organising our event, we will be coming back to hold future events with this hotel soon.
Sincerely,
Kelsey Stiller.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task. You provided clear details about the event, highlighted specific positive aspects of the hotel (cleanliness, staff, decorations), and offered constructive suggestions for improvement regarding food service. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed, and the letter maintains a professional yet appreciative tone, which is exactly what is required for this type of General Training task. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use transition words such as 'Additionally', 'Although', and 'In my opinion' to guide the reader through your points. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the positive feedback to the constructive criticism and finally to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct topics. The use of cohesive devices is generally natural, though some minor improvements in sentence linking could make the flow even more sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for a formal business letter. Phrases like 'brought to my attention', 'fell short', and 'phenomenal' show a good command of language. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, incorporating a few more precise collocations or slightly more advanced synonyms would elevate the response further. Overall, your lexical range is more than adequate for this task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor issues, such as the comma splice in the first paragraph ('...at your hotel, we really appreciated...') and the unnecessary comma in the third paragraph ('...quality and taste of the food, was phenomenal!'). However, these are minor slips that do not interfere with the clarity of your message. Your control over verb tenses and sentence construction is strong.
