Student answer (Band 8.5)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to express my appreciation for the excellent service your hotel provided during a corporate event that my company recently organized there.

The event was a two-day business conference held on 15th and 16th July and attended by approximately 120 employees and clients. It included presentations, workshops, and networking sessions. Overall, the event was a great success, and the participants were very satisfied with the arrangements.

There were several aspects of the hotel that I particularly liked. First, the conference hall was spacious, clean, and well-equipped with modern audio-visual facilities. In addition, your staff members were professional, friendly, and always willing to assist whenever required. The quality of the food served during the event was also excellent, and many guests commented positively on it.

Although our experience was largely positive, I would like to suggest a few areas for improvement. The Wi-Fi connection in the conference area was occasionally slow, which caused minor difficulties during some presentations. Furthermore, clearer signs directing guests to meeting rooms would make navigation easier, especially for first-time visitors.

Thank you once again for your hospitality and support. We look forward to organizing future events at your hotel.

Yours faithfully,

Gaganpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly provided details about the corporate event, identified specific positive aspects of the hotel such as the conference hall and staff, and offered constructive suggestions regarding Wi-Fi and signage. The tone is consistently professional and appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands the purpose of the communication immediately. You have successfully met all requirements of the task, maintaining a clear and logical focus throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the event details, positive feedback, suggestions for improvement, and a polite closing. You have used cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Although', and 'Furthermore' effectively to link your sentences and paragraphs. The structure is coherent, and the use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The flow of information is smooth, making the text very easy to follow for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 8.0

You have demonstrated a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context. Phrases such as 'express my appreciation', 'well-equipped', and 'navigation easier' show a solid command of language. The word choices are precise and contribute to the professional tone of the letter. While the vocabulary is accurate and sufficient, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items could elevate the response further. However, the current range is more than adequate to convey your message clearly and effectively without any errors in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 9.0

The grammar is highly accurate throughout the response. You have used a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences, with great control. For example, the use of subordinate clauses in 'Although our experience was largely positive, I would like to suggest...' demonstrates a good grasp of complex syntax. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no noticeable grammatical errors. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and agreement is consistent. This level of accuracy is indicative of a high-scoring performance.
