Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to express my appreciation for a corporate event organized at Hotel Decent.

The event was on 27 July around 6pm. It was an employee appreciation event as requested by my senior manager for successful completion of our first project.

My manager asked me to arrange the event on short notice. However, your hotel manager Mr Ramesh assisted me promptly and gave suggestions to arrange the event on such short notice. In addition, during the event the was extremely polite and helpful. While the food was exceptional, my boss was impressed with the decoration. Particularly, for such corporate event.

As a suggestion I would be grateful if you can improve your parking facilities as few of my colleagues faced issues not only in finding a good parking spot but also while taking out their cars. I understand that the complex is still under construction, but a separate parking facility is much appreciated if you are organizing events with more people.

Overall, my manager and I are satisfied with your service and will contact you in future for any of our events.

Yours faithfully,

Harsh Rathod

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing event details, expressing appreciation for the hotel's service, and suggesting improvements regarding parking. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of the 'event details' could be slightly more descriptive to fully flesh out the context. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively, maintaining a clear purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Overall' are used effectively to link ideas. The progression of information is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The structure is clear and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the context of a formal business letter. Phrases like 'express my appreciation', 'corporate event', and 'promptly assisted' demonstrate a good command of language. There are minor issues with collocation, such as 'the was extremely polite' (missing subject) and 'for such corporate event' (missing article). However, the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly and professionally. With more precise word choices, the score could be higher.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some grammatical slips, such as the missing subject in 'the was extremely polite' and the awkward phrasing 'my boss was impressed with the decoration. Particularly, for such corporate event', these errors do not impede communication. The majority of the sentences are clear and grammatically sound. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the formal tone is maintained throughout the letter.
