Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to share my feedback about our experience at your hotel during our recent company event.
I had organized a Christmas party for our staff at your hotel. This occasion was special because on this day, we had celebrated the success of our company. We had distributed bonuses to our employees for their hard work and dedication and played some games together.
The decoration was simple but elegant. The food served was flavourful and presented beautifully. The serving staff was very professional. Even tough, the menu was provided, they had asked for everyone’s preferences and served the food accordingly.
However, there were some shortcomings our guests had experienced, which I would like to bring into your attention. The waiting time for the food to serve was long. It could be due to less number of staff members, which I believe could be improved. Also, you could replace the recorded music with the live performance which would make the dining experience more memorable.
I hope you my feedback would be helpful for you.
Thank you,
Regards,
Iqbal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing details about the Christmas party, highlighting positive aspects like the decor and staff, and suggesting improvements regarding service speed and entertainment. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'details' of the event to provide a more vivid picture, but overall, the response is well-developed and covers all parts of the task clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a polite closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Also', and 'Even though' to link your ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the request. To improve, you could use a wider range of cohesive devices to create smoother transitions between sentences, as some connections feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases such as 'simple but elegant', 'flavourful', and 'professional' are used accurately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'bring into your attention' (should be 'bring to your attention') and 'less number of staff' (should be 'fewer staff members'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated synonyms would help elevate the score. The errors present do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'Even tough, the menu was provided' (should be 'Even though the menu was provided') and 'I hope you my feedback would be helpful' (a redundant 'you'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors. However, the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, and these minor slips do not cause any confusion for the reader. To improve, focus on proofreading for small subject-verb agreement errors and ensuring complex sentence structures are punctuated correctly.
