Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to suggest some possible improvements regarding the dining area. I would like to provide some details about the event and kindly request your assistance in resolving this matter.
To begin with, I would like to explain that we had farewell event at your hotel last Saturday. The event was very well organised and staff was very friendly and active.
Unfortunately, the dine-in experience was poor due to less space and small counters, which has resulted in disappointment.
In addition, the food was cold and tasteless, making this situation particularly inconvenient.
In light of the above circumstances, I would greatly appreciate it if you could take required action in fixing the space.
I believe that taking this step would not only solve the space problem but also food presentation would make it great dine-in experience.
I hope you will consider my request and take the necessary action as soon as possible. I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Anuj Chauhan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, you mention the event was 'well organised' but do not specify what made it so, and the suggestions for improvement are a bit vague. To reach a higher band, try to provide more specific examples or justifications for your points. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening sentence is slightly confusing as it focuses on the complaint before introducing the event context.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use some cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'In light of the above circumstances' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body is slightly abrupt. The paragraphing is sufficient, but the flow could be improved by ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is clear.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'farewell event', 'inconvenient', and 'resolving this matter'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'dine-in experience' which is slightly repetitive, and 'take required action in fixing the space', which sounds a bit unnatural. To improve, try to use more precise collocations. For instance, instead of 'fixing the space', you could use 'addressing the spatial limitations'. The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('we had farewell event' should be 'a farewell event') and issues with subject-verb agreement ('staff was' should be 'the staff were'). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'food presentation would make it great dine-in experience'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and consistent verb agreement will help improve your accuracy.
