Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I'm writing to provide the feedback about an event that my company recently held at your hotel.

Firstly, I would like to mention that all participants like several aspects of your hotel. They were particularly impressed by the comfortable meeting facilities, the professional attitude of the staff and clean and pleasant environment of the hotel. In addition, some attendees also commented positively on the location of the hotel.

Apart from that, there were some disappointment regarding the lunch that was served during the event. The main concern was the limited variety of food options available. Some participants mention that the menu did not cater according to the dietary preferences, such as, vegetarian and light food choices. A few of them complaint that the food was not served at an ideal temperature, that affected their overall dining experience.

I would like to suggest some improvements that could help you in future events. It would be beneficial to offer a wide range of food options and collect information about the guests' dietary requirements before events. Moreover, ensuring that food is freshly prepared and served on time would greatly improve customer satisfaction.

We appreciate the customer service provided by your hotel and hope that suggestions help to maintain the high standards your guests expects. We would be happy to consider your hotel for further events.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing event details, highlighting positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the section regarding the catering issues, which provides specific examples of the problems encountered. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the closing statement maintains a professional and constructive tone. The response fully satisfies the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', 'Apart from that', and 'Moreover' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth. The referencing is clear throughout, and the letter maintains a consistent formal structure from the opening to the closing.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You use some good collocations such as 'professional attitude', 'dietary preferences', and 'customer satisfaction'. However, there are a few minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'some disappointment' (should be 'some disappointment' or 'some disappointing aspects') and 'complaint' (should be the verb 'complained'). While the range is adequate, incorporating a few more sophisticated or precise terms would elevate the score further. The meaning is always clear, and the language is natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, though there are occasional slips, such as 'all participants like' (should be 'liked' to maintain past tense consistency) and 'guests expects' (should be 'guests expect'). Punctuation is generally accurate, though the comma usage in 'such as, vegetarian and light food choices' is slightly awkward. Despite these minor errors, the grammatical control is strong and does not impede communication.
