Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr Smit,
I am writing to express my opinion during my visit last week from my corporation in your restaurant.
On July 21 we arranged a conference meting for our company at your place.
Firstly, the hotel staff were really welcoming that made my tendency not only exceptional but also welcoming. They served each table with glass of water and offer some scrumptious food.
Although the service was satisfactory, the hotel was not clean I noticed stain on chairs and tables were messy as well. Therefore, this area needs replacement by arranging new authentic tables , dining chairs with soft pillows to get back support while sitting. Moreover, the waiting area is to small and people often found difficult while reserving the table or waiting for their turns.
I hope my next visit makes more joyful in future by giving some discount as a regular customer would be satisfactory.
Yours sincerely,
Meet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: the event details, positive aspects of the hotel, and areas for improvement. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. The description of the event is brief, and the suggestions for improvement, while relevant, are slightly confusing in their phrasing (e.g., 'this area needs replacement by arranging new authentic tables'). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the opening sentence is slightly awkward and does not clearly state the purpose of the letter. To improve, ensure that each point is expanded with more specific detail and that the purpose of the communication is clearly stated in the opening.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the event details, the positive feedback, the complaints, and finally the closing. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For instance, the transition 'Therefore' is used to connect the observation of stains to the suggestion for new furniture, which is a bit of a leap. Additionally, some sentences are disjointed, such as the transition between the service and the cleanliness issues. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be understood. There are some attempts at using more descriptive language, such as 'scrumptious' and 'exceptional', though the collocation is sometimes off, such as 'my tendency not only exceptional'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'conference meting' (spelling) and 'waiting area is to small' (grammar/word choice). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that vocabulary is used in the correct context, avoiding repetitive or slightly unnatural phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include 'my visit last week from my corporation in your restaurant' (unclear prepositional usage), 'the hotel staff were really welcoming that made my tendency' (incorrect relative clause), and 'people often found difficult while reserving' (missing object). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from being considered consistently accurate.
