Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to say thank you for providing such a wonderful services during our International food event held on March 21st. Mr. John " Event manager" helped me alot and provided beautiful ideas for making this event more memorable for all the international and local students.

I am glad to share with you that your hotel decoration was elegant and appreciated by everyone. The color combination was so mindful and matched our event theme. In addition, the service given by your staff members was the best part of the event. The main entrance feels like someone is walking at the Palace.

The only recommendation I would like to share with you is your audio system, which I believe is too loud at sometimes. Otherwise, the whole event was wonderfully executed.

I would really appreciate your efforts towards making our event more meaningful.

Thank you

Your Sincerely

Shikha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting an area for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, although the development of the 'event details' could be slightly more specific to reach a higher band. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is fully informed of the writer's intent, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'Otherwise' are used to link sentences and ideas effectively. While the transition between the event description and the recommendation is straightforward, the overall structure is coherent and appropriate for a formal letter. The paragraphing is sufficient and contributes to the clarity of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. There are some good collocations like 'wonderfully executed' and 'elegant'. However, there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'providing such a wonderful services' (should be 'service') and 'mindful' (which is used incorrectly here; 'thoughtful' or 'well-chosen' would be better). The range is sufficient to convey the message clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. The use of 'at the Palace' is slightly awkward in this context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'a wonderful services' (plural/singular mismatch), 'helped me alot' (spelling), 'walking at the Palace' (preposition error), and 'too loud at sometimes' (incorrect phrase). Additionally, the closing 'Your Sincerely' is incorrect; it should be 'Yours sincerely'. These errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher score, though they do not impede communication.
