Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to apprise you that I work at shine company and we visited at your hotel for our birthday party, last week. The purpose of this letter is to highlight the areas liked by my team members along woith the areas of improvement.
To begin with, the event was organized on 13 August in the banquet hall of this 4 star hotel in the evening time. The party was joined by almost 300 people to celebrate our owner's birthday, which was a quite special day.
The areas liked by team members was the service by your staff as it was frequent. On the other hand, some areas still need to improve such as food quality because food served during party was not fresh, so it should be improved by hiring professional chefs.
I hope to enjoy our next visit with high- quality food.
Yours Sincerely,
Manpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. However, the development of these points is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention the service was 'frequent', you could have provided a specific example of how the staff assisted you to make the letter more persuasive and realistic. Similarly, the suggestion for improvement regarding food quality is clear but could be expanded with more detail on what specifically was lacking (e.g., temperature or variety) to better meet the requirements of a formal complaint or feedback letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with' and 'On the other hand' to signal transitions between ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the event details and the feedback could be smoother. Paragraphing is present, but the paragraphs are quite short, which limits the development of your ideas. To improve, try to link your sentences more naturally using a wider variety of cohesive devices rather than relying on standard opening phrases.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'apprise', 'banquet hall', and 'professional'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'visited at your hotel' is incorrect; it should be 'visited your hotel'. Additionally, 'the event was joined by' is slightly unnatural; 'attended by' would be more appropriate. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on collocations and more formal business terminology would significantly enhance your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'along woith' (spelling), 'the areas liked by team members was' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'food served during party' (missing article). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the use of articles (a/an/the). Increasing your control over these basic grammatical rules will help you achieve a more polished and professional tone.
