Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir/madam,
I am writing this letter to express my experience with the services of your hostel. Actually we visited and organize a event in your hotel on last sunday which went smooth.
It was a corporate event of 50-60 people and i suggested the name of your hotel because I visited it before. we were together to celebrate one of the milestone our company ABC achieved .
I am impressed with the arrangements and most importantly with the staff members they are polite . Ambitious and food quality is also impressive , however some of my co- workers are not happy with the food. I
t is multinational company and we have employees from different culture and tradition . the food choices for non- vegetarins are vast , but veg options are quite limited. I suggest to make chances to your menu if possible and you should hire more staff because number of servers are less than the required .
I am looking forward from you to hear positive response .
Your faithfully
Amandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: the event details, the positive aspects of the hotel, and suggestions for improvement. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening and closing salutations contain minor errors. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat brief. For example, the explanation regarding the lack of vegetarian options is clear, but the suggestion to hire more staff could have been expanded with a specific example of when the service was lacking. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally absent. For instance, the transition between the positive feedback and the suggestions for improvement is abrupt. There are also some issues with sentence structure and punctuation, such as the fragmented sentence 'Ambitious and food quality is also impressive' and the inconsistent use of capital letters. While the overall message is coherent, the flow could be improved with more varied linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the message, but it lacks the range and precision expected at higher bands. There are several word-choice errors, such as using 'hostel' instead of 'hotel' and 'make chances' instead of 'make changes'. Additionally, the phrase 'I am looking forward from you to hear' is non-standard. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'corporate event' and 'multinational company', the overall lexical control is limited, and some errors in collocation are present.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'organize a event' (article error), 'on last sunday' (preposition error), and 'number of servers are less' (subject-verb agreement). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and incorrect capitalization. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. To improve, the student should focus on basic subject-verb agreement and article usage.
