Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I recently organized an event of annual meeting at your hotel on July 22. As you requested, I would like to give you feedback about your hotel's service.

There are several things, which are highlight of your hotel. Firstly, your employees are very friendly and supportive. They helped us a lot throughout function. Moreover, my staff was delighted by the taste of food. Everyone just kept complimenting about the food's taste and presentation. Your staff has done outstanding job in decoration as well.

On the other side, we did not get enough parking place, which forced us to spend extra money on it. Secondly, the wi-fi singles are very poor, due to that we kept getting interruption in throughout our presentation of slides.

I hope this email help you to make significan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. However, the response is incomplete, ending abruptly mid-sentence ('significan'), and fails to meet the 150-word minimum requirement. This under-length significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the conclusion is missing. To improve, ensure you fully develop each point and provide a proper closing statement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, but the lack of completion prevents a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'On the other side' helps guide the reader through the text. However, the abrupt ending disrupts the overall flow and coherence of the letter. To improve, ensure that your letter has a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a complete, formal conclusion. Referencing is generally clear, but the mechanical nature of some transitions could be improved for better flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. Phrases like 'delighted by the taste of food' and 'outstanding job' are functional. However, there are some inaccuracies, such as 'wi-fi singles' (should be 'signals') and 'event of annual meeting' (should be 'annual meeting event'). The range is somewhat limited, and the vocabulary does not demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for higher bands. Expanding your range of collocations and ensuring correct word choice will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'throughout function' (missing article), 'kept complimenting about' (incorrect preposition), and 'did not get enough parking place' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the incomplete final sentence is a significant error. To improve, focus on article usage, correct prepositional phrases, and ensuring that all sentences are fully formed and grammatically sound.
