Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir,
Dear Sir / Madam,
I am writing to thank you for the excellent service provided by your hotel when my company organised a staff appreciation event there last Saturday.
The event was attended by around 80 employees and included a welcome reception, dinner, speeches and an awards ceremony. Your staff helped us arrange the seating, decorations and catering, and everything went smoothly.
I particularly liked the spacious and clean banquet hall. The food was fresh and delicious, and the staff were friendly, professional and helpful throughout the evening. The convenient parking facilities were also appreciated by our guests.
However, there are a few areas that could be improved. Some guests found it difficult to hear the speeches because the sound system was unclear. Also, the registration area became crowded at the beginning. Having more staff at the entrance could make the arrival process easier.
Overall, we were very satisfied with the service and would happily use your hotel again for future events.
Yours faithfully,
Kamaljeet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You provided clear details about the event (80 employees, reception, dinner, etc.), identified specific positive aspects of the hotel (banquet hall, food, parking), and offered constructive suggestions for improvement (sound system, registration area). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, meeting all requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Also', and 'Overall' to link your points effectively. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The transition between the positive feedback and the suggestions for improvement is smooth and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context. Phrases like 'staff appreciation event', 'convenient parking facilities', and 'arrival process' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it is mostly standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to describe the service or the atmosphere of the event, though your current usage is entirely natural and error-free.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of sentence structures used correctly. You successfully employ complex sentences, such as 'I am writing to thank you for the excellent service provided by your hotel when my company organised a staff appreciation event there last Saturday.' Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no noticeable grammatical errors. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, contributing to a very professional and polished piece of writing.
