Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing on behalf of the Selcom Industries Co Ltd., to extend my deepest gratitude for helping us host such a successful and memorable ceremony.
Our company achieved one of the greatest milestones, which is 50 years in the steel industry. The event first commenced with a welcome ceremony where the founder took all the employees on an emotional ride down memory lane, of how the company has grown and sustained over the years and still stands on such a robust foundation. The welcoming ceremony was then followed by an award ceremony where all the quarter achievers were appreciated and awarded for their endeavours.
One thing worth mentioning was the hospitality served at the event. All the stewards went above and beyond to make sure all the attendees were served well and attended to in a timely manner.
While we are enthralled by the level of service provided, I would like to suggest that the experience would've been even more satisfactory if there was a technical team present at the event who could assist us with the presentations, speakers and, music.
I am thus confident that we surely will be hosting more such events at your prestigious hotel.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Justin Green

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described the event (a 50th-anniversary ceremony), highlighted the excellent hospitality provided by the hotel staff, and offered a constructive suggestion regarding the need for a technical support team. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a corporate event, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction and event details to the positive feedback, the suggestion for improvement, and the closing. You have used cohesive devices such as 'The event first commenced', 'The welcoming ceremony was then followed by', and 'While we are enthralled' to link your ideas smoothly. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is coherent, making the letter easy to follow for the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context. Phrases such as 'extend my deepest gratitude', 'robust foundation', 'endeavours', and 'enthralled by the level of service' show a high level of lexical control. There is a good awareness of collocation, and the language used is precise and professional. While the vocabulary is strong, it remains natural and fits the context of the letter perfectly, contributing to a professional tone throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your writing displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of relative clauses ('which is 50 years in the steel industry') and subordinate clauses ('if there was a technical team present'). The grammar is generally accurate, with only minor slips, such as the unnecessary comma after 'memory lane' or the slightly awkward phrasing 'would've been even more satisfactory'. These errors are rare and do not impede communication. The control over punctuation and sentence construction is consistent and supports the formal tone of the letter.
