Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I'm writing to express my deep appreciation to your company for arranging a successful annual event at your hotel last week. Everyone present there was overwhelmed by the services and the positive treatment of your team.
Basically, the event was the award ceremony for the employees to evaluate their productivity and reward them for their hard work. It started with the opening speeches, confidence-building workshops, certain cultural events and ended with the award ceremony, which was also followed by dinner.
The hotel team arranged everything very easily and nicely without delay, which was praised by all the guests present there. Especially the food and infrastructure of the hotel were heart-touching. All the waiters were courteous and respectful in their service. i personally impressed by their behaviour.
Apart from the positivity provided by the hotel management, the one thing that bothers us is the wifi connectivity, which becomes a big issue at the entrance of the hotel. Some of our guests spend 20 to 30 minutes to reach the exact room where the event is being organised. So I recommend you fix that issue as soon as possible, as our next is also scheduled with your hotel. I am highly thankful for your time and patience.
Kind regards,
ABC

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided clear details about the event, such as the award ceremony and workshops, identified specific aspects you liked, including the staff and infrastructure, and offered a constructive suggestion regarding Wi-Fi connectivity. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the purpose of your communication. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the positive feedback and the area for improvement is slightly more nuanced, perhaps by using a more formal linking phrase to maintain the professional tone throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Apart from' and 'So', to link your thoughts. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect sentences more fluidly. For instance, the transition between the description of the event and the praise for the staff is a bit abrupt. Improving the use of cohesive devices would make the text feel more cohesive and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'productivity', 'courteous', and 'infrastructure' correctly. There are some instances where word choice could be more precise; for example, 'heart-touching' is not the most natural collocation for describing hotel infrastructure. Additionally, there is a minor error in 'i personally impressed', which should be 'I was personally impressed'. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more sophisticated collocations and ensuring grammatical accuracy in your word usage would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'everyone present there was overwhelmed' (which could be phrased more naturally as 'impressed') and 'our next is also scheduled' (missing a noun like 'event'). Punctuation is generally fine, but ensure you capitalize the personal pronoun 'I' consistently. To improve, focus on proofreading for minor subject-verb agreement errors and ensuring that all necessary nouns are included in your complex sentences.
