Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to give thanks for your hospitality at my company's end of year party.
My company's end of year party was held on the 24th of December last year at your hotel. The number of people that attended the party were fifty in number. This included the company's directors, shareholders and some famous and well-respected dignitaries of the community. Staffs were not left out, and everyone had a plus one.
My mother recommended your hotel, and I was opportune to check it out for myself before hosting the party at your hotel. I love the location of the pool which was at the roof next to the lounge. In addition, I love how the lounge is separated from gym area, unlike other facilities I visited.
In my opinion, there are some areas that needs improvement, such as the lightening of the lounge area, the place wasn't too bright and affected some of the pictures we took and also, include more option of local delicacies in your food menu.
Thanks for your hospitality and I looking forward to using your facility in the nearest future.
Yours faithfully,
Blessing John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the event, identified specific aspects of the hotel you enjoyed, and offered constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, when mentioning the 'local delicacies,' you could briefly explain why this would enhance the guest experience for future corporate events. Overall, the response is clear, relevant, and fully satisfies the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'In my opinion' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For example, the transition between the event details and the positive feedback could be smoother. Paragraphing is used correctly, which helps the reader follow your points easily. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You used some appropriate terms like 'dignitaries,' 'hospitality,' and 'delicacies.' However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'lightening' instead of 'lighting' and 'opportune to check it out' which is slightly unnatural. Additionally, 'Staffs' is incorrect as 'staff' is an uncountable noun. While these errors do not impede communication, using more precise vocabulary would elevate your score. Focus on learning the correct plural forms and common collocations in a business context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The number of people... were fifty' should be 'was fifty') and tense inconsistencies ('I looking forward' should be 'I am looking forward'). Furthermore, there are some punctuation errors, such as comma splices in the final paragraph. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the overall meaning of your letter. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your verb tenses are consistent throughout the text.
